
At school I was regularly given the task of showing prospective parents and their children around the school. I loved this opportunity and responsibility. I used the skills developed from those tours to become highly proficient in delivering short talks to the public in the foyer of the Parliament, and answering visitors' questions about the history of the parliament and the development of the building.
I loved this visitor interaction which extended in to welcoming visitors to the building, checking them in and helping to organise larger groups of school children and other groups.
I joined the Scottish Parliament Visitor Services team following completion of a two year apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship I worked in Visitor Services, Public Information, Human Resources and Facilities Management. I also got some experience working on events in the Parliament.
In Visitor Services I worked on the Welcome 'pod' which was the first point of contact for all visitors once they had come through security, and also on the front desk, signing in visitors for meetings with MSPs or for the public gallery in the chamber and for various group meetings and events. I gave 10 minute introduction talks about the Parliament and its history to groups of visitors in the foyer, typically two or three times a day.
My duties also included preparing lanyards and other details for the following day's group bookings, managing the booklet and information stands to ensure they were always well stocked and ..........
