Summary

My name is Zena Masseri. I have recently completed my integrated Masters degree in Neuroscience from Cardiff University. During my masters degree, I worked in a laboratory along with other researchers and students on a project related "The Interdependence of primary and secondary somatosensory cortices for plasticity and texture discrimination learning". I am a highly reliable and collaborative person, looking for excellent opportunities to develop and progress as a Neuroscience researcher and writer.

Overview

4
years of post-secondary education

Education

Cardiff University
Wales

Masters degree in Neuroscience
09.2021 - 07.2022

University overview

  • I conducted research at the Bioscience Cardiff University Laboratory for about a year. The project focused on somatosensory learning and memory in the primary and secondary somatosensory cortex of mice brains. The research project allowed me to develop my skills in methods such as chemogenetics and behavioural methods. The data was analysed using various statistical methods and software such as R studio.

  • Through my Masters research on sensory discrimination and memory in mice, I was able to contribute to a published scientific articles titles "Interdependence of primary and secondary somatosensory cortices for plasticity and texture discrimination learning by Anurag Pandey*,Sungmin Kang‡, Nicole Pacchiarini*‡, Hanna Wyszynska*‡, Aneesha Grewal*, Alex Griffiths*, Imogen Healy-Millett*, Zena Masseri*, Neil Hardingham*, Joseph O'Neill‡, Robert C. Honey‡ and Kevin Fox*"

  • I am familiar with specific areas of the brain in terms of anatomy and function. In addition, I have dissected human and animal brains multiple times which has improved my ability to create diagrams and identify specific areas.

Cardiff University

Bachelors Degree in Neuroscience
09.2018 - 07.2021

-Contemporary topics in disease

-Neurobiology of brain disease

-Systems Neuroscience

-Fundamental Neuroscience
-Brain and Behaviour

-concepts of Disease

-Advanced Research Methods

-Advanced Research Techniques

-Biological Chemistry

-Genetics and Evolution

-skills for Science

-Anatomy -Environment

  • Laboratory Research every Fridays

Skills

-I hold a Home Office personal license (PIL) for conducting regulated procedures on animals (mice)

-I have experience in laboratory research from my BSc and MSc in Neuroscience

  • Some techniques include immunohistochemistry, western blotting, chemogenetic and behavioural approaches on mice, microscope operating, dissection of brain (mice and human), centrifugation techniques, gel electrophoresis

  • -One year of full time laboratory experience from masters degree

    - Some knowledge in bioinformatics and in software such as R studio and Linux

-Reporting and analysis of scientific data

    - Knowledge in methodologies and terms related to science, in particularly Neuroscience

Accomplishments

    Nursing Home Volunteer
    January 2018 — February 2018

  • Assisted with personal care of people there.
  • Support for people who may have cognitive impairment such as dementia

  • Shop Assistant, Bernardo's Shop, Cardiff

    September 2017 — January 2021

  • Efficiently processed cash and card payments
  • Provided friendly, attentive service, promptly responding to customer
    enquiries and processing order requests.
  • Assessed second-hand goods upon delivery, ensuring products looked,
worked and maintained in good working order.

  • Experience in Radiography department

    May 2018 — June 2018

  • Watched brain scans such as MRI scans and other imaging techniques
  • Experience of Clinical settings

  • Primary School Volunteer (2018)

    Birchgrove School in Wales
    • I volunteered at a local primary school

    - I was responsible for a group of children and helped them to understand basic scientific concepts in Biology and Chemistry. This required excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team with other volunteers.

-This allowed me to excel in my presentation skills as I was required to create diagrams and other visual aids.

Interests

Journal Club (2021-2022)

• Part of a series of lunchtime discussion for researchers reviewing and presenting recently published data.

-This activity required the creations of presentation slides and other visual presentation.

-This improved my presentation skills but also further helped with time management as I was submitting coursework alongside this.

-In addition, I helped write scientific articles alongside my peers.

Singing

• Grade 7 in classical singing.

-Singing for over 8 years has taught me time management skills, persistence and commitment.

-I was able to give professional singing lessons to beginners. This required patience and developed my teaching abilities.
