Critical Care/ICU/HDU- Royal Sussex County Hospital

  • Patients are admitted to the Unit with a variety of disorders:
  • Respiratory failure, trauma, hemorrhagic shock, septic shock,
  • acute kidney injury, neurological disorders, and vascular and gastrointestinal surgery.
  • The acuity of patients 1-3 with one-to-one nursing through the 12-hour shift.
  • In-depth knowledge of Arterial Blood Gases and haemodynamic in the treatment of extremely complex patient presentations.
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitors, 12 lead ECGs, and ventilators.

2023

  • Haematology/Oncology - Royal Sussex County Hospital
  • Haematology Unit consists of the Haematology/Oncology Ward and a Haematology Day Unit.
  • The Ward consists of a ten-bed ward caring for haematology patients, oncology patients receiving chemotherapy or having had complications from treatment, and private oncology patients.
  • The Day Unit consists of 6 chairs offering a daycare service to haematology patients requiring non-in-patient treatment and support.

2021

  • Lindridge Stroke Rehabilitation - Princess Royal Hospital
  • Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury long-term patient rehabilitation within a busy multidisciplinary ward.
  • All aspects of daily nursing care for patients with differing levels of physical disability and impairment. Complex discharge pathways involved occupational therapy, physiotherapy and neurological psychotherapy.

2021

  • Clinical Infection - Courtyard - Royal Sussex County Hospital:
  • This three-level barrier nursing facility was recommissioned for covid positive patients during the pandemic.
  • Patients were nursed with level 3 PPE, either having been stepped down from ICU/HDU or escalated up to these wards.

  • Stirling Day Case Unit - 7-bed day ward:
  • Patients attend for kidney biopsies, Haemocath line insertions, infusions and transfusions.
  • Renal biopsy assistance pre and post-procedure. Observations of the patients adhering to specific time scales and assisting patients to mobilise after a certain time frame and helping in their discharge.
    Renal OPD consultant lead clinic:
  • Venepuncture and urinalysis for each patient that attends this clinic.
    Hemocath Line Insertion procedures:
  • Operating in a sterile field, assisting nephrology consultants in the procedure of tunnelled lines for the purpose of dialysis. Working as a treatment room practitioner, I prepare the room, bring the patients to the room for the procedure and then repatriate them for X-ray afterwards. This is considered minor surgery but with the assistance of a radiographer for real-time imaging whilst the lines are being placed.
  • Full knowledge of ANTT and sterile field required.
