I come from an extremely sporty background that has instilled values in me as well as matured me from a young age. I was born and brought up and Singapore and therefore I am used to the fast-paced lifestyle that is required. Singapore being the metropolitan it is, requires you to adapt and be quick thinking. I personally feel, I am an Independent person but at the same time I like to work in a team. Most of the sport I have played have all been team sports and therefore I know the importance of it. The work I have done has also made me a more mature individual that pays attention to key details
As part of my National Service in Singapore, I served it in the Singapore Civil Defence Force. The first 3 months involved me mainly working on my physical fitness and then I got posted to be an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). After 5 weeks of training, I passed out as an EMT to Paya Lebar Fire Station where I was working in the ambulance and attending emergency calls in that area. My job required me to be an assistant to a paramedic. The job required a number of skills, one important one was the ability to communicate with the patient. Gathering medical history and understanding when and how the incident took place were common questions. At a young age, maintaining levelheadedness was not easy, you see things that you probably never see before but its about being efficient in these situations, prioritising the patient and their needs instead of yourself. Personally, I felt that while I was on the job I was extremely focused on catering to the patient so what I was dealing with did not really occur to me. We were required to carry out many tasks whenever we were on shift. Restock the ambulance, maintain a checklist of equipment that was carried in the ambulance, teach new EMT's the do's and dont's on call. While working, the situations we dealt with ranged from a small headache to a cardiac arrest. Hence, you deal with almost every single medical situation and you learn how to treat them. You learn the steps, the guidelines, the way to handle a patient with that much chaos. It was one of the most fruitful experience and as a person I feel I developed a lot.
After my second year, I wanted to intern in the finance sector. Therefore my search on went to find an internship in Singapore. MatchMove is a Fintech that focused on moving digital money. It is an embedded Banking-as-a-Service platform that allowed you to Spend, Send and Lend money. I came on as a Commercial Intern that focused on the Shipping Industry. MatchMove wanted to extend its digital currency to Ship Management Companies. I was tasked to research and gather information on these companies that were looking to digitalise their seafarers payroll. I came up with a document that listed companies that we could potentially look at as well as their point of contact in order for us to approach them. The document listed a number of multinational as well as local companies. I also helped out in other different departments, was involved in meetings with different companies where we pitched our idea to them. I was involved in general meetings, where they discussed their future growth, the ways in which business was going to development and things they wanted to improve on. Overall, this was an experience to mainly learn how the Fintech industry works and generally how meetings are carried out as this was my first internship at such a level.
