Work History

Stage 4 Research Project

University of York
York, North Yorkshire
10.2023 - Current
  • Using zebrafish to investigate the pathology of Krabbe disease, a type of leukodystrophy that is caused by mutations in galc gene
  • Working with stable galca/b mutant zebrafish line and wild type zebrafish with disrupted galca/b genes with CRISPR/Cas9 system.
  • Applying live dye called acridine orange that can stain apoptotic cells and lysosomes to assess apoptosis events in the brain of zebrafish embryos at early developmental stage (1, 3 and 4 dpf)
  • Using fluorescence microscope and confocal microscope to capture and analyse fluorescence signals in Fiji
  • Extract DNA from zebrafish to confirm their genotype and map to phenotype data

NERC Summer Internship

Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
York, North Yorkshire
07.2023 - 09.2023
  • Use Chetone histrio moths which show Müllerian mimicry of warning colour patterns to study the genetic mechanisms of convergent evolution
  • Generated a dataset of categorical/near categorical traits from two populations of Chetone histrio moths
  • Three continuous traits are quantified using packages in Rstudio and tools in Photoshop
  • Performed GWAS analysis to assess any association between the continuous traits and SNPs
  • Provided workflow for further investigations

Stage 3 Research Project

University of York
York, United Kingdom
10.2022 - 04.2023
  • A collaborative project to test the potential of a microbial metabolic assay using resazurin to measure the amount of viable microorganisms transferring from gloves onto fabrics
  • Used spectrophotometry to estimate the number and metabolic activity of E. coli
  • Identified issues with experimental methods to improve data accuracy

Sequence Analysis Report

University of York
York, United Kingdom
10.2022 - 01.2023
  • An independent bioinformatics project
  • Performed GWAS analysis on 17 samples of L. infantum and L. donovani from 4 different sites to examine their population structure and identify origins of unknown samples
  • Used various tools in Galaxy to align genome samples against a reference genome and identify SNPs/indels sites
  • Performed PCA analysis and calculated nucleotide diversity in Rstudio
  • Carried out optional ploidy analysis and produced a corresponding heatmap using R

Bio-X Research Institute

Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Shanghai, China
06.2019 - 07.2019
  • Shadowed a Masters student's research project
  • First encountered with bioinformatics (analysed tumour data from TCGA in Rstudio)
  • Learned about cell culturing techniques
  • Operated PCR machines and micro-volume UV-Vis spectrophotometer
  • Developed a meaningful and close relationship with the Master student

Antibiotics Unearth

Microbiology Society
Stevenage, United Kingdoms
04.2018 - 05.2018
  • Collected soil samples and analysed the potential to provide new antibiotics
  • Carried out a series of lab work including Gram staining
