I am a British student studying History and French at Durham University, eager to gain experience at a professional publication during the summer.Since secondary school, I have actively sought out opportunities to enhance my expertise, from creating a podcast and pursuing work experience, to becoming the Editor-in-Chief of Durham’s student newspaper. These experiences have reinforced my ability to thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environments where creativity, precision, and strong values are key.
I manage a team of 80+ journalists, producing both a weekly fortnight edition and our online content. I am also responsible for hiring new editors, leading editorial board meetings, and working to secure the paper's finances, among many other aspects.
I independently run and organise a podcast in which I have interviewed 20 people, from former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, to North Korean defector Timothy Cho, to historian Dominic Sandbrook, to the former President of Ireland Mary McAleese, among many others.
I was responsible for organising the sponsorships for the Durham Union, the heart of debating in Durham, where I raised almost £700 worth of sponsorships.
Alongside two other News Editors, I led a group of 7 News Reporters and Investigations Editors to report on and investigate stories, as well as pursuing stories myself.
I spent time working in development at Zandland, an award-winning documentary studio, where I spent most of my time researching for high-profile documentaries.
I shadowed a researcher on the show for a few days, contributing to team meetings, deciding what stories we wanted to include on the show, and writing research briefs for guests.
I interviewed notable individuals, and wrote profiles on them for the fortnightly print edition. Interviewees have included former Conservative Party leader Michael Howard; groundbreaking YouTuber Jim Chapman; internet sensation Jackie Weaver; and composer John Rutter.
Leadership: I have been in positions of leadership over a wide range of individuals, particularly in my leadership of 80 individuals at Palatinate In this role, it is my job to lead a group of people towards the goal of producing high-quality journalism
Teamwork: I enjoy working in a team towards a goal I have benefitted so much by supporting and learning from those in more senior positions, and have enjoyed collaborating with others to achieve goals
Initiative and passion: I pursue my own interests to a high level of success, such as my podcast, the newspaper, or my work experience This has ensured I have developed into someone who is willing to take reasonable risks and steps into the dark to achieve what I want
Organisation: I am able to juggle a range of responsibilities at one time My job at the newspaper is especially time-consuming, however I throw my heart and soul into it to produce positive results, as well as ensuring I maintain my other activities, interest, and hobbies
Communication: I have developed the ability to speak to people without being hesitant or shy In particular, running a podcast, as well as interviewing people for Palatinate, means I am well-suited for roles that involve speaking to people
