I have worked on my mixed arable and poultry family farm in North Yorkshire, doing every weekend shift in the hens from 16 years of age onwards, gradually picking up more and more jobs as I got older and gained more experience and driving license. I currently carry out all the summer baling of the wheat and barley straw, and also have gained experience leading grain and operating our John Deere combine and stacking straw with JCB tele handlers. In addition to this, I also aid in all aspects of cultivations and land preparation including ploughing, subsoiling, cultivation and drilling. I also have my PA1 and PA2 certificates for handling and application of pesticides with a self propelled sprayer and have experience in this also. I have also taken on much of the granular fertiliser application. In addition to this, I have two years experience hedge cutting. I have also gained experience in maintenance of equipment.
I have also worked for a local farm contracting company when the farm at home requires less full time staff. There I have gained experience carting grass silage as well as buck-raking on silage clamps with JCB loading shovels (435 and 419) as well as transport and application of slurry.
Before starting my studies at Newcastle University, I moved to Norfolk for 2 months where I aided a large farm with their potato harvest. My work there involved transporting potatoes in box and bulk trailers from field to the store as well as some yard based work.
- When I was younger, I learned to play the piano and enjoyed doing grades 1-4.
- Between the age of 10-16 I learned to sail dinghies and took part in some sailing races at my local club. I gained the qualifications from level 1 to 4, with the next level being the instructor qualification, which I am yet to do.
- In my spare time, I have several hobbies, one of which is working on cars and other vehicles with my mates. I am fortunate enough to have the space where I live to do this, and I spend a lot of time on evenings and weekends fixing and building things with my friends like their land rovers and my motorbikes and quad bikes. In addition, my friends and I enjoy clay pigeon shooting at our local clay pigeon ground.
- When I was 18, I lived in the French alps for 3 months, where I learned to teach skiing, achieving a level 2 BASI qualification in ski instructing. This was an amazing experience and I met some lifelong friends in the process.
At the time of writing this, I am just about to finish a 3 year degree at Newcastle University where I have been studying agriculture. This has been the experience of a lifetime and something I have dreamed of doing since the age of around 10! In my 3 years, I hope to leave with a degree in agriculture, but I have gained so much more than this, I have met an incredible group of people and have made friends for life, and no end of fond memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
