  • This was an opportunity to gain further general experience, whilst learning about medicine in another country. The post was based in an emergency department in rural city of 120,000, but serving an area the size of Wales. My role was to work as a middle grade, involving being the most senior doctor on duty in the hospital at night. My role also involved the supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and medical students. As the regional centre, most major trauma, medical and surgical emergencies (from up to 600 miles away) were brought to the department. As a result I was able to improve both my practical and management skills for all types of emergency and many routine problems. In addition , I had plenty of exposure to primary care related problems (due to the structure of the Australian healthcare system).

Research

  • The Effects of Burns, Posture, Exercise and Valsalva’s Manoeuvre on the Cardiovascular System.
  • This involved the use of impedance cardiography to look at the stroke volume and cardiac output in rats, immediately following a standard scald injury. Male human volunteers were used to investigate the same parameters for posture, exercise and valsalva’s manoeuvre. This part of the study included a comparison of impedance cardiography and Doppler ultrasound in assessing the stroke volume and cardiac output.
  • Use of a Non-invasive method (Doppler Ultrasound) in measuring changes in Stroke Distance in children who are fluid overloaded or fluid depleted.
  • In order to do this, children having haemodialysis at the regional Renal Unit were recruited. Using a Doppler probe placed in the suprasternal notch, we measured stroke distance at hourly time intervals, before during and after dialysis. Simultaneous measurements of fluid volume removed, heart rate and blood pressure were also taken
