Thonmoy Josh Dey

Doctor

Summary

After overcoming significant challenges following a serious road traffic collision during medical school, I successfully qualified as a doctor, demonstrating my determination, adaptability, and ability to succeed under pressure.

I have a passion for problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and innovative thinking. I am driven by a desire to apply my skills beyond traditional clinical settings that challenge me to think creatively and to develop innovative solutions in the healthcare field.

My unique journey has equipped me with a strong foundation in critical thinking, empathy, and leadership, which I am excited to bring to new opportunities where I can make a meaningful impact.

  • I've been involved in Target Medicine since starting medicine at UCL in 2015
  • I represented UCL at the MSC Teacher's Conference SA - 20/22
  • Being a first-generation student with a similar background to mentees and having several years of experience as a 'mentee', 'mentor' and 'medical student' puts me in a unique position to lead other medical students in this programme
  • I have always considered myself a logical problem solver and a big picture thinker
  • Bringing in a variety of experiences, I am able to tailor my guidance and support in a way that I believe will ensure the best engagement amongst peer mentors & mentees

Administrative Assistant and Peer Business Mentor

Citrus Saturday, University College London
07.2013 - 09.2016
  • My experience of Citrus Saturday begins in 2011 as a participant (in secondary school) before developing into a peer business mentor, a formal UCL employee (whilst also studying for my A-levels at sixth form) and, finally, as a UCL medical student
  • Throughout the course of my progression, skills that I have developed incorporate effective time management, teamwork and communication skills
  • Citrus Saturday is a charitable programme created by entrepreneurs and educators from UCL to provide an experiential education activity that introduces young people to entrepreneurship, teaches enterprise skills and shows them what it's like to earn money by starting a business
  • It is active internationally, in 12 countries, including Swaziland and Mozambique
  • My role was varied and included supporting at events (for example, the yearly International Citrus Saturday in July), supporting volunteer mentors (as well as participants), managing all financial & administrative tasks for the CS team and the important outreach with schools
  • Beyond outreach with schools, I was involved with presenting and representing Citrus Saturday for collaboration at the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) in 2014, the first time it had been hosted outside of the USA (hosted by UCL).

Medical research placement

Medical Research Council
07.2014 - 08.2014
  • National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), now the Francis Crick Institute
  • Title: "The knockdown of the gene ADPRHL1 on restricting cardiac chamber outgrowth in Xenopus laevis embryos, using translation-inhibiting morpholino oligonucleotides." A short (~200 hours), Nuffield-sponsored, research project was based on a candidate gene (Adenosine Diphosphate-ribosylhydrolase-like-1; ADPRHL1) that was suspected to contribute to some cases of congenital heart disease (CHD); my project was carried out alongside Dr
  • Stuart Smith's project on CHD (within Dr
  • Tim Mohun's group)
  • My main aim was to knockdown the function of the gene and to use the phenotypic effects as a tool to predict what role the gene may play in some cases of the disease
  • Previous knockdown experiments of both variants of the protein combined (23kDa and 40kDa) showed a range of heart deformities in developing embryos
  • My project focused on the knockdown of the 23kDa variant of ADPRHL1
  • This was shown to have distinctly negative changes to components of the cardiac myofibril, led to embryos that had hearts which failed to beat and added to preliminary evidence for its potential role in congenital heart disease
  • Techniques I carried out, supervised and later unsupervised, were at a postgraduate level and included: - Micro-injection of morpholino oligonucleotides into 4-cell stage embryos - In situ hybridisation (whole-mount) - Western blotting - Immunocytochemistry
