I have lived experience of Alcohol Addiction This gives me an advantage when speaking with potential service users I believe I am a great role model and this will also give me the advantage of gaining trust
I listen to the individual needs of each service user and with a holistic approach, I am able to realise when and if other service providers need to be contacted and we would be able to generate a tailor made care plan through recovery capital
I am mindful and never judgemental when speaking with a service user Unfortunately, addiction is the product from something which the service user may have endured previously
Having undergone peer mentor training and developing these skills places me in a good position to recognise addictive behaviours and I have used these skills when having one to one appointments with service users,
I have also completed other training courses which enables me to identify specific needs of a service user. In return service users have specifically requested that I conduct their follow up appointments when necessary.
I have just celebrated two years of sobriety and I am continuing to thrive in all aspects of my life. I was lucky enough to have stayed in the rehabilitation centre for nine months. During this time I was able to offer and give advice to my peers. From this I was awarded with a senior 2 position, which has only ever being awarded twice. I have been back to the rehabilitation centre on a number of occasions to speak with other recovering addicts. I was also invited through Phoenix Futures to have a meeting with government to give my opinion on where addiction service were failing in order to increase budgets nationwide.
