  • My 1:1 support role requires me to carry out percutaneous endoscopic gastrostom (PEG) feeds 4 times a day, administer several medications throughout the day, support with communication using switch buttons and on body signing, carry out activities fun and educational, support with transitions from sitting to standing to laying and use specialist equipment throughout the day to ensure the child has full inclusion in everyday activities

  • This role enabled me to be able to support individuals in their everyday environments to enhance their ability to participate in activities of daily living (ADLS) and ensure their safety
  • I was often meeting patients at their own homes upon discharge from hospital. On arrival I would carry out an assessment to observe how patients carried out things such as; washing, dressing, making breakfast/lunch/dinner/drinks, transferring in and out of bed/shower/bath and toileting
  • I would look at access to property, how patients would usually get medication and shopping and how to overcome that barrier if patients were no longer able to go carry out this task independently
  • I would signpost to other professionals such as physio, social care, GP’s and community subscribers (someone who would visit the patient to let them know what groups and sessions are available in their area to get them out and about)
  • If equipment was needed, I would order equipment for the patient, provide training and sign the patient off ensuring they was safe to use the equipment in their home without my supervision
  • After carrying out my assessments I would then be expected to go back to the office and type up all notes and add them to their system within 24 hours

  • Skills I focused on were physical skills, social skills, emotional regulation and overall wellbeing

  • This job required me to observe the children and help them develop their holistic needs, as well as having to plan and support my key children in their next steps of development
  • This involved me planning activities, for the children to participate in, which lead me to be able to evaluate them as to what stage they were at and if there were any areas of improvement that could have been made
  • As a special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) this role requires me also to liaise with other early years providers, schools, educational psychologists, speech and language therapist, occupational therapists, physio therapist and social workers through multi disciplinary team meetings to ensure each child with SEN had up to date EHCP plans and set new goals and targets
  • I had to oversee the day-to-day operation of the nursery’s SEN policy, co-ordinating provision for children with SEN, advising on the graduated approach to providing SEN support, liaising with parents of pupils with SEN and be a key point of contact with external agencies, ensuring that the nursery keeps the records of all pupils with SEN up to date
