As the Mould Room Manager in Radiotherapy Physics at the Birmingham cancer Centre my role involved running the Mould Room on a daily basis whilst acting as line manager for up to 8 staff members of varying grades and experience.

The Mould Room is involved in the manufacture and provision of bespoke devices to assist in delivering Radiotherapy accurately on a daily basis for anything up to 35 daily treatments.

  • Dealing daily with patients who will be undergoing Radiotherapy treatment and also relatives/care givers.
  • Working alongside and liaising with other areas of the department in ensuring all appointments are booked in a timely manner ensuring both Trust and National target dates are met..
  • Prioritize and delegate tasks to staff members rotated within Mould Room.
  • Apply critical thinking to analyse problems, evaluate solutions and select best decisions to non-standard patients set-up
  • Act as local training supervisor and mentor to staff who will work within the Mould Room section of the department including providing guidance and formulation of individual training plans through to formal competency based formal assessments.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining training records and competencies of all staff working within the Mould Room section.
  • Ensuring all trust mandatory training was completed
  • Took part in annual staff appraisals
  • Providing training and presentations to other staff groups involved in planned treatment of patients diagnosed with cancer from Therapeutic Radiographers including students to junior doctors and Oncology Registrars.

Head of Mould Room

  • As Head of Mould room at Mid Kent oncology centre I was charged with running a department that was smaller than I was used to but had a different set of challenges. Mid Kent Oncology Centre was based across two sites 1 at Maidstone and also in Canterbury. Although joint sites both departments used in-house immobilisation systems meaning that should it be required, patients from one department could not be treated on the other site. On appointment I was tasked with finding a solution to this problem. After much research I came across a system widely used on the continent but until that time was not used within the UK which was then implemented across both departments and is now routinely used not only at Mid Kent Oncology Centre but also throughout the UK.
  • Implementation of new immobilisation system used in treatment of patients undergoing Radiotherapy treatment.
  • Working alongside and liaising with other areas of the department implemented a new booking system which meant appointments were booked in a timely manner ensuring both Trust and National target dates are met..
