Currently I am employed by Cochran Ltd as a time served Mechanical Fitter. I began my employment here as an Apprentice in June 2018, becoming qualified in October 2022. During my time at Cochran Ltd I have developed a lot of valuable practical experience and knowledge of the numerous types of tools and machinery that enable me to carry out my role effectively and efficiently.
As an apprentice I started off assembling the boilers which involves the installation of various valves and pipework. In my fourth year I also served as a chargehand to the fitters for a two week period. Whilst gaining hands on skills I also gained skills and knowledge on how to correctly read technical drawings and how to comply with the health and safety standards. Health and Safety is a very key part of my role as I am often working at height with dangerous equipment.
Now I have been a qualified Tradesman for 3 years and I am building the combustion burners, this requires manufacturing the various gas, oil and dual fuel burners that get installed on the boilers. Within this role it is very important to work to strict schedules and to make sure my work output ties in with the given completion dates. This is essential for us to achieve our customer orders and fulfill their expectations. I attend progress meeting with my line manager and fellow colleagues whereby we update each other on the status of each of the jobs we are working on. This allows us to implement any adjustments to the schedules or discrepancies within the job to ensure we complete on target.
This year I have been working with new fitter apprentices supervising and overseeing the practical aspects of their apprenticeships which I have found rewarding to pass on my skills and knowledge.
