Syed's career in the railway profession has included his management of projects requiring design and delivery of data systems and major commissioning. He has a passion for standardization to improve safety, reliability and consistency across projects. He has specialist expertise in installation design on the railway, project engineering and in MCS SPAD and OSTO data design. This has resulted in his being heavily involved in the development of standard processes within the Applications team, while also developing hardware solutions including standard rail assemblies, and data creation tools to improve efficiency. Syed's experience enables him to be the technical interface between Network Rail and other project partners in multi-partner schemes.
Part of the UK control systems team contributing to the development and deployment of the fourth generation enhanced modular control system (MCS).
Designed and compiled the complete Signal Passed at Danger (SPADAlert) including Out of Sequence Train Operation (OSTO) database for various projects such as North Kent, Ashford, and Cambridge.
Designed and delivered railway signaling maps using inhouse software such as MapEdit and Genesys as per the project requirements, technical standards and schedule.
Production of designs for projects and bids. Ensured the design conforms to approved standards, specifications, contract and safety requirements.
Undertake the role of Designer as identified in the CDM regulations, with particular attention to design risks. Ensure that Safety risks are designed out "as far as is reasonable practicable.
Analyses of costing for design solutions ensuring that compliant solutions are in budget.
Designed and developed engineering CAD drawings such as Location Schematics, Ducting and axle counter drawings to scale to aid the installers in identifying asset locations and spec.
Providing on-site assistance, technical knowledge & troubleshooting of assets such as Tram Signals & Points Position Indicators for site install team where required.
Designed & managed a number of in-house test rigs for both IVVQ testing and Factory acceptance testing (FAT) of cabinets & assets against an approved test schedule.
Contribute towards research activities for various work packages to build prototypes for future of European Railway within Thales UK and European entities.
Capture and align work package use cases requirements and contribute towards system design and development.
Develop and track KPI's to assess performance of the relevant prototypes and models.
Update and manage work package technical documentation i.e. Thales contributions to the use cases in the Shift2Rail and Transforming Transport projects.
Designed the system architecture for the predictive maintenance model, Track circuit anomaly detection due to weather and the integration layer using the canonical data model.
Worked closely with the Thales Research Team (RTI) to model the use cases using the fault tree modelling approach.
Provided support to software development team to convert the MATLAB models to Python in order to build demonstrators in the Thales visualization platform (TIRIS).
Involved in the implementation of the new Seltrac Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system as part of the 4LM project on London Underground.
Designed and developed CAD and Visio drawings of the CBTC system electrical design of Engineering Vehicles i.e. Battery Loco – A, B, Rat and Sandite.
Worked as part of the mechanical team at Thales to design 3D Models and drawings of various assets such as Antennas, Masts, Bracketry and Signals using Bentley Microstation.
Analyzed 3D data using Amberg Rail 2.0 on London underground to measure clearances, exporting it to Microstation to assist planning and installation.
Worked through the lifecycle of installation; raising pre-construction surveys, creating clearance approvals for customers, analyzing survey reports from site to enable installation.
Accompanied civil engineers on site as a radio and mechanical engineering expert to troubleshoot installation complications.
Worked closely with the engineering team on planning and recording the electrical maintenance on site including substations, fire alarm panels, TEGG testing, Power Factor Capacitors and all HV and LV wiring and cable installations.
