I work as an SHO in the General Medical Ward with out-of-hour
cover extending to the Acute Medical Unit
Duties and responsibilities:
-Initial assessment of patients admitted into the General Medical Wards.
-Completing medical procedures including venous cannulation, ABG sample collection, , NG tube insertion and urinary catheter insertion.
-Presentation in the medical ward rounds.
-Evaluation of patient treatment and management plans. This includes updating inpatient prescriptions.
-Providing updates and completing next-of-kin discussions while ensuring
proper documentation.
-Making referrals and following up on consults to different sub-specialties to
ensure continuity of care.
-Completing discharge summaries and initiating the appropriate outpatient
follow-up plans.
-Teaching during the departmental teaching sessions that involve fellow
resident doctors, registrars and consultants.
-Contributing to Audits and Quality Improvement Projects
-Provide out-of-hours medical cover across multiple specialties, working closely with the Medical Registrar and multidisciplinary team to assess, escalate, and manage acutely unwell patients.
-Shadowed Senior House Officers in ED with support from registrars and consultants.
-I completed history-taking procedures and patient assessments.
-I participated in a resuscitation simulation to review emergency procedures in cardiac arrest and unstable patients.
I worked at a multispecialty secondary hospital that operated a consultant-led General Medical Unit with various inpatient services
Duties and responsibilities:
-Receive, examine, investigate, and treat patients coming into the units while making the appropriate decisions around admission and discharge.
-Participating in daily ward rounds and handover rounds.Re-evaluating management plans with the consultants and updating drug charts.
