Skills

  • I feel that my skills and experience gained over the years in the many various roles have been invaluable to my current role as counsellor My journey toward becoming a counsellor has been shaped not only by professional training but also by my own personal experiences that have cultivated empathy, resilience, and a genuine passion for helping others Navigating through my own personal challenges have provided me with first hand insight into the emotional struggles people often face
  • I have acquired many different skills over the years from roles which may seem very different from a counsellor role but on reflection have been invaluable in supporting me with my clients
  • For example
  • 1 I have learned to be patient and fully committed in all roles that I do, past and present These attributes are important when supporting clients, helping me to hold space for clients at their own pace It is also vital that the client can put their trust and belief in me at all times Quite often clients lead chaotic lifestyles, and I believe being consistent offers the client security which is often lacking in their own personal lives
  • 2 When faced with unexpected issues I can assess the situation calmly, adapt and respond accordingly This is extremely important when clients are distressed or are presenting with suicidal ideations
  • 3 I am used to finding the root of a problem and working through it step by step, I have found this a skill which applies when helping people work through their emotional challenges Many of my clients' original assessment issues are quite often very different from what they are experiencing Exploring what is really going on for the client requires the ability to truly be present and hear what a client says both in words and what's beneath them
  • 4 I have experience in working with people from various social and economic backgrounds which enables me to understand different perspectives and to communicate clearly I feel that this is vital in counselling where the therapeutic relationship is central, with strong interpersonal skills building trust I feel that in counselling it is important to be flexible and adapt how we work with our client's own experiences and their expectations
  • 5 My past working experiences prior to counselling have required discipline, safety awareness and responsibility which I feel are traits that are vital in counselling as they help create a secure and ethical space for clients This also allows me to understand the importance of boundaries, confidentiality, and professional conduct
