- Involved in the development of a high-temperature heat pump, from design to manufacture to testing.
- Developed a 1D thermodynamic simulation of the heat pump in Scilab, and used this to create the initial heat pump layout using various optimization routines.
- Performed Finite Element Analysis using Ansys Mechanical to ensure the integrity of the heat pump design. Compromises between thermodynamic optimization and structural integrity were necessary to develop a finalized design.
- Responsible for developing the data acquisition software used to monitor the heat pump’s performance. National Instruments CompactRIO hardware and LabVIEW software were used for this purpose. Sampling rates up to 10 kHz were required, necessitating the use of FPGA modules.
- Assisted in troubleshooting initial heat pump performance issues (mainly vibration problems) by performing modal analysis in Ansys and applying techniques such as Fast Fourier Transforms in Scilab.
- Developed countless engineering skills during the design process, being heavily involved from concept to final product of a complex machine. Tasks performed included: creating P&ID diagrams, vortex shedding calculators for thermowells, modal analysis of non-linear springs, performing structural code checks using Finglow, and heat exchanger analysis using HTRI Xist.
