I have worked as a tram driver for over eleven years, I have developed many key skills whilst working in this safety critical role, I also having good knowledge of the rules and regulations of the railway which I think is a good step to becoming a trainee train driver.
I take pride in my role as a tram driver and have gained excellent personal skills along the way, I am punctual and reliable and have the ability to remain calm whilst under pressure, I also adapt quickly to changing operational situations and demands. I would love the opportunity and the challenge of becoming a train driver, I believe I have some key skills and experience already which I can bring and develop for the train driver role.
Being a tram driver requires high levels of concentration at all times and the ability to work alone for long periods of time, another vital skill required is having excellent communication skills, being able to fully understand instructions given and carry them out safely, also being confident using the tram P.A system to announce any information clearly to the customers on board.
During my career at Metrolink I have gained a lot of skills which I can use towards the trainee train driver role, I have experience with Network Rail signals, driving on light rail and performing station duties safely. I am currently on an early roster at Metrolink which requires me to do vehicle checks before the trams go out in service, tasks include fault finding, checking the safety equipment and reporting any faults to the control room, plus being the first tram out on the system I will be looking out for any hazards that may have occurred overnight.
My key responsibilities at Metrolink include -
- Drive a tram along set routes and pick up / drop off passengers at tram stops in a safe manner.
- Watch for track hazards and observe safety signals.
- Observing rules and regulations including safety procedures.
- Make passenger announcements as required.
- Communicating with passengers in a professional and customer friendly manner.
- Provide excellent customer care at all times.
- Maintain professional contact directly via radio and telephone contact with the control room for route information and to report any concerns.
- Assist in any operational incidents as required.
- Produce accurate and concise incident reports.
- Deal with difficult situations that arise in the course of the day.
- Carry out vehicle maintenance checks, fault finding and reporting as required.
