Summary

I'm a film director of over 20 years working on TV commercials and short-form factual content at the highest level of communication and production. known as a talented, resourceful and adaptable technical problem solver and a proactive team player.

My value lies in my ability to scale to the size of the production: I'm equally capable of directing large multi camera high-budget pieces, or getting very hands-on and self-shooting to stretch that budget. either way its the satisfaction of delivering beyond expectation that I love.

Work history

Lead Technical Film Director

Dyson
Malmesbury, Wiltshire
09.2005 - 08.2024

At Dyson I made and directed global TV commercials, social and online content at the highest level for nearly 20 years. Employing techniques including live action, stop motion, timelapse, MoCo and directing CGI houses. The breadth of my experience is vast.

With direct involvement from the conceptual and creative stages my role was key in managing the tone, content and messaging to make audience-relevant stories that spoke with the established voice of the brand.

Uniquely multi faceted I am equally as at home directing a crew or self-shooting as I am at conceptual pre-production or editing the final piece.

I have an engineering brain adept at tacking technical challenges, pulling off some world-first shots entirely in camera and on budget.

Achievements -

Instrumental in the evolution of the visual language pioneered by the brand in its storytelling. Frequently working 1-on-1 with the Global Creative Director to elevate everyday items into globally recognised icons.

Recognised as “high brand DNA” I would be called to mentor new or junior filmmakers and creatives.

Designed and project managed the build of the large film studio a Dyson HQ. A £1m+ project involving justification to board members and James Dyson. I oversaw building and services contractors, and specified and purchased the suite of broadcast cameras, grip and lighting equipment. The studio is a significant financial and practical benefit to Dyson to this day, with the break-even point for the investment coming just 18 months from completion.

Pioneered techniques such as CGI to live action integration, ultra high-speed macro cinematography and large multi-cam timelapse shoots. With the ethos that communication is infinitely stronger when you show rather than tell the viewer of a product benefit I have created many world-first sequences.

Worked directly with senior figures such as the CEO, Global Director of Communications and James Dyson to conceive, script and deliver key brand and NPD comms.
