By 2016 I had grown the books into multi-million pound accounts and as such I needed to decrease my workload. We employed a branch manager to look after the retail arm and I continued to look after the wholesale arm and the underwriting arm.


Job Role Underwriting Manager


  • Lead Underwriter for all schemes with wide authority parameters.
  • Responsible for overall operation and control of the schemes.
  • Main point of contact for all departments of capacity (underwriting, claims, accounts, compliance, audits etc).
  • Grow and support for the schemes whilst maintaining profitability.
  • Train and develop the team of underwriters.
  • Responsible for submission of risk and premium Bordereau.
  • Point of contact for all claims issues (e.g non-disclosure).
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a panel of sub-brokers.
  • Help and support non-underwriting colleagues with large or complex risks. Ensuring they are and presented fairly to market and provide advice on most suitable products to recommend to client based on their needs.
  • Negotiate contracts - Binding Authority Agreements.
  • Write policy wordings, summaries of cover, IDID's etc.
  • Write suites of endorsements.
  • Write the rates.
  • Write the underwriting guides.
  • Write question sets for each product/line of business.
  • Design documentation (schedules, statement of facts etc).
  • Write the processes (e.g claims, referrals both internal and external).
  • Design IT systems.

I managed 3 parts of the business at this point. A retail arm, a wholesale arm and from 2007 onwards an underwriting arm.


In 2007 I arranged our first Binding Authority Agreement and began to Underwrite property owners and household risks. Underwriting became a core element of my branches activities and over the years I continued to develop our products and services achieving significant growth.
