Work History

Prosecutions Officer

Great Western Railway
Reading, Berkshire
06.2022 - 01.2025
  • Dealt with fare evasion cases for GWR. This involved evidence/fact checking, requesting summonses, case presentation.
  • The role also involved liaising with the courts, ACRO Criminal Records Office and with staff who had reported the fare evasion cases.
  • Further to this much of the work involved communicating with the passengers who had evaded fares. The communication with them was by email and needed to be accurate, sometimes sensitive and non judgemental. Good communication was key to this role so as to establish trust with partnership agencies. Many of the cases were settled out of court, with this being the preferred option for the company.
  • This role required an in depth knowledge of the computer system used to deal with such cases. It further required a good knowledge and understanding of the legislation that covered such fare evasion cases ( Regulation of Railways Act 1889). Some of the cases involved interviews of passengers. Such interviews needed to be PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984)compliant. If cases were not procedurally correct or breached PACE, then they would be withdrawn. It was important that such cases were withdrawn from court as the court trusted me to ensure quality control of cases and to demonstrate the integrity of the GWR Revenue Recovery Department.
  • Collaborated with colleagues for effective teamwork.
  • Upheld laws and regulations within my jurisdiction, ensuring compliance from all parties involved.

Police Officer

Avon & Somerset Constabulary
Bristol, Avon & Somerset
03.1995 - 06.2022
  • Spent approximately 6 years on uniformed patrol at Yeovil and Southmead Police Stations. During this time I was a response officer involved in responding and dealing with 999 and other non-emergency calls. In addition to this I was also involved in interviewing suspects and preparing case papers from charge to the conclusion of the court case.
  • Tutored several uniformed officers to ensure that they were capable of and confident in the role of a police officer.
  • Qualified to the rank of sergeant, having passed the theory and practical examinations. I later utilised these skills as an acting sergeant on uniformed teams on a number of occasions.
  • Spent 2 years on a specialist domestic violent unit that dealt with high-risk victims and suspects. This involved safeguarding, building professional relationships and gaining the trust of victims and their families. Much of the work was custody-based dealing with suspects under pressured custody-time limits where liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service was necessary to determine whether there was sufficient evidence to charge. Many of these cases were remand cases where victims were at risk, should the suspect be bailed.
  • Spent 12 years in Bristol Criminal Investigations Department (CID) dealing with serious and major crime investigations for offences such as rape, serious assaults, arson, aggravated burglary and robbery. Again, this work involved responsibility for the whole investigation including dealing with victims, witnesses and suspects and thereafter taking the case to court. It involved responsibility for the whole of the investigation which included the proper recording of material from the initial report, preparing the case to the criminal standard, liaison throughout with the prosecution team and the Crown Prosecution Service and the ongoing review of material throughout. As an officer in the case of many investigations, I have acted as the disclosure officer for these cases, having full awareness and understanding of the Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act 1996 (CPIA).
  • Spent 3 years on the Major Crime Investigation Team dealing with major crime investigations such as offences of murder, manslaughter and other complex crime investigations. During this time I have been the officer in the case for two murder investigations and a corporate manslaughter investigation. I have also carried out the family liaison officer role and the PACE advisor role (Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984) for several murder investigations.
