Helping people with complex and behavioural needs is a massive passion of mine, breaking barriers, supporting and guiding people though a trauma/life challenges, helping people with mental heath challenge's by being a professional resource and part of a supporting network, through lived experiences of my own I’m compassionate and fully understand and can relate to how social pressure, isolation, life and mental state/ depression can have such a grasp you may need to release or drowned out what is going on or ‘fit in’, it may feel overwhelming and no way to change or not know who or where to go ……. But it is possible, and I would love to be part of that help and support.
It’s not a straightforward road and they is many obstacles and possible setbacks but through good, honest straight talking support, trust is a massive part, some people may feel let down and unsupported and alone due to peoples pre-judgement and lack of understanding or unwillingness to be compassionate, being part of a team that supports guiding someone through a scary vulnerable time, giving them safe recovery and support throughout the process, treating people with dignity and compassion. Everyone is an individual, creating that support network working as a union with other professionals and medical professionals for a meaningful recovery with ongoing help and support.
In my experience I have encountered patients from every walk of life. Often there are barriers when trying to communicate with them such as language, learning difficulties, aggression and intoxication through alcohol or drugs. I have developed my skills in this area by undertaking training such as conflict resolution, learning disability awareness and safeguarding. I strongly believe that we need to support people as an individual and treating them holistically supporting their choices enabling them to achieve their goals.
It is imperative that I have a sound knowledge of working practices and collaboratively working with managers, patients, social workers and outside agencies to ensure safe effective care is achieved. I feel good quality of care and working to a professional manner brings understanding and shows empathy, which helps to build rapport with patients and by having the time to listen shows them you care.
I can offer excellent, safe and compassionate care to patients and feel that I have numerous transferable skills from my time working within EMI. I have learnt to work individually, within a team in various settings under pressure and time restraints where problem solving and thinking on my feet have been pushed to the limit.
Due to the nature of the role working within EMI, it is imperative that I ensure I have adequate and accurate documentation to support CQC and that my records and reports are maintained in accordance with local policies.
I am fully aware of the importance of confidentiality and adhere to local policies and procedures. I appreciate the importance of information governance which incorporates the process of handling personal information relating to patients values of respect, integrity and accountability. I feel that my previous experiences within St Johns and a team co-ordinator within EMI would enhance the role within many organisations.
I am honest, reliable, extremely motivated, computer literate and have excellent interpersonal skills both verbally and written.
As a special interest of mine I have undertaken online CPD courses in substance misuse to broaden my knowledge.
Working with vulnerable adults with various mental capacity and behavioural needs, I am always looking for creative ways to enrich day to day living, some of these included:
Creating a sensory room, from planning to sourcing funding to create a diverse safe space for sensory enrichment for those who cannot physically join in unassisted to service users who can immerse themselves in a space designed to be nostalgic and stimulating the senses.
Organising a Claremont market day, we now do once per calendar month, we imitate Dewsbury market and take our services users out In the garden to have a ‘rummage’ we sourced donations of clothing and household ornaments that the residents can purchase for 10p-50p.
This stimulation creates a sense of excitement within our home and residents thoroughly enjoy and look forward to our market day.
Staff wellbeing Wednesday. I am a qualified beautician with 10 plus year’s experience. We have had challenging times through covid-19 and all staff have felt it, burn out -sadness from loosing residents and staff shortages, I put forward to our home manager to utilise my skills and use a day to boost moral and give a little back, cost is minimal to the home and its only my time, staff enjoy small beauty treatment they have a choice of: brow waxing and tinting, lash tinting, facial waxing, skin assessment and mini facial, gel polished toes or a hand manicure tidy and massage.
This is a massive hit with our staff and one I think is unique to a workplace, our staff save money and it’s a real confidence boost. I have now a hairdresser and another beautician on board so we can keep regular and accommodate all staff on different shift patterns.
In 2008 I began my training to become a Nail technician/ Beautician, i’ve worked in various salons to gain experience and build a client portfolio. In 2012 I rented my own salon with two self employed hairstylists and two further beauticians, as well as providing services to my own clients I supported and provided inhouse training for staff within the salon. Day to day running, admin/tax and accounts, assisting staff with HMRC and their own accounts and finances.
In 2019 I was forced to close with covid -19 as it wasn’t viable, I opened up a area of my home to accommodate some of my longest standing clients.
I still work salon based in my free time.
Working on events providing first aid and support to the general public, being a first point of call for support either emotional or medical.
Volunteering Cadets (aged 11-18). I helped to support them to care for others, gain new experiences, and learn important life skills, including first aid.
I had the opportunity to design my own role. This involved lesson planning, fundraising, running fun activities, such as outdoor events, summer camps, or providing more ‘behind-the-scenes’ support.
When I first started volunteering for St john youth cadets, I immediately saw an opportunity to give the cadets real life experiences, rather than being classroom-based learning basic first aid.
I wanted to push the boundaries, showing cadets first hand life experiences, we had a set programme to work through, I could choose what segments I wanted to focus on relevant to the time of year.
I chose homelessness and addiction; this was around wintertime. This exposure was a real eye opener for the youths and put into perspective different walks of life for people in crisis. I offered aftercare support for the youths due to it being a real reality shock and caused upset.
I arranged with Leeds homeless kitchen for the cadets to help sourcing clothing, toiletries and food vouchers which we were inundated with items.
This took a couple of weeks planning with ratio of staff to cadets and risk assessments as this was something St john had never done before; it was a massive success the cadets really were humbled and wanted to make this a regular occurrence.
The second term we concentrated on addiction with drugs and alcohol also misuse of prescribed medication, through the contacts I made with Leeds kitchen I arranged for people from various walks of life from recovery to current addiction who was more than happy to come and talk with our cadets about their life experience and journey through addiction and recovery also social implications, community judgement.
