Work History

Physician associate in medicine

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust
Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
03.2022 - Current
  • I currently work within gastroenterology. My usual day involves scribing for consultant ward rounds in the morning or doing my own independent ward round. The afternoon involves completing jobs from the rounds including referring patients, organising discharges/follow up, interpreting results such as chest x-rays, ECGs and bloods. I will see any patients if they begin to deteriorate and manage these and seek senior support if appropriate.
  • In my time I have developed my clinical skills and confidence, particularly when supporting the hospital out of hours. I have begun advancing clinical skills and routinely perform ascitic drains on the ward and teach new team members.
  • I have provided key data for the UK-wide Acute Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Audit by the British Society of Gastroenterology. I have worked on a project to provide JAG accreditation for the trust to provide small bowel capsule endoscopy service. We collected the data over 1 year period on study-specific CRFs (created by myself) and analysed nearly 100 capsule reports capturing data in 9 key domains. This data was presented trust wide to medical and surgical divisions.
  • I have begun mentoring students on placement at the trust and act as a supervisor when rotating through gastroenterology, providing academic and pastoral support. We have meetings at the start and end of their placements to deduce what they need to gain, provide learning opportunities and discuss any important cases they have seen.

Clinical Trial Coordinator

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
Manchester
04.2018 - 02.2022
  • My main responsibilities involved coordination of clinical projects for the lymphoma department. This includes coordinating study set-up, processing clinical trial amendments, reviewing contracts, entering data and maintaining source data/site files. As a team we had over 30 trials on the portfolio - including phase 1 (incl first in human), large phase 3 and observational.
  • Participated in initiation visits and investigator meetings, implementing trials in accordance with study timelines and budgets.
  • This role required good administrative skills, especially advanced use of excel, PowerPoint, and word to create documents. We had a process within the team of identifying deviations from trial protocols and collecting this in a spreadsheet. This meant the data could be analysed and I would present this back to the team to make them aware and troubleshoot how to improve our service provision.
  • The lymphoma team were pioneers within real-world data. I volunteered my time to help with this important project alongside my usual job responsibilities. I contributed by collecting data for each patient case and publishing this data on the electronic paper records. As I was collecting the data I helped design any adjustments to the form and also worked with the informatics department to implement these changes. Any queries returned from the sponsors I would meet with the PI and clarify these.
  • I have developed robust organisation skills within a clinical environment - understanding prioritisation of jobs and balancing this with the risks. I have good administration organisation skills and live by to-do lists in my professional and personal life. I had personal filing systems within clinical research to track jobs such as data point queries and pending signatures.
  • I have successfully held a sponsor-initiated audit on a rapidly recruiting phase 2 trial.
  • In this role, I have completed 3 novel audits. 1. Reviewing if blood acknowledgment on the electronic patient records was being completed by clinical staff. 2. Review if adverse events are being reported and if so, are they in enough detail to report on the case report forms. 3. Review if clinical trial scans were being reported as per criteria in the specific protocols.
