I have been in my current role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Blackpool, for the last 5 years. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, and as my skills and knowledge have grown, so has my confidence. I am ready for a new challenge, and am looking to follow my passion into care quality improvement.
Having consolidated my theoretical and practical training as a specialist in my area, and as part of my ongoing professional development I have recently completed a a post graduate award in medical education at masters level, in order to become a faculty registered trainer, which I have enjoyed. I hope to use my skills as a trainer to inform and identify practical strategies in improving care, meeting targets and implementing new pathways.
I have been involved in the development of clinical standards, standard operating procedures and audit groups to ensure KPIs are being met and we are continually improving as a service. I personally lead a target group to ensure the governance database is up to date in my area and I am passionate about this area of my role.
In my previous role as health advisor in Salford I did regular partner notification audits. More recently I have contributed to various audits including the 'CSE' and 'domiciliary visits' end of year audits.
As a service we recently made the switch to use of national PGDs for contraception. I was part of the team asked to work on reviewing local PGDs against the national ones in order that we could adapt to suit our service. I then helped facilitate the roll out of the new PGDs including training for staff, in order that this switch was as seamless as possible.
Part of my clinical role is a weekly young persons clinic for under 25's, this has allowed me to build on my experience of working with young people and the challenges this can present. I continue to offer all methods of contraception, planning episodes of care and offering health advice. Blackpool has a large proportion of young people who face at least one disadvantage, and many face multiple disadvantages. There is a complex mix of social issues and widespread poverty. I have consolidated my ability to communicate clearly and effectively across boundaries using skills such as active listening and checking understanding whilst also taking account of differing perspectives. This has proven invaluable in this setting but I believe these skills are transferrable and give me a strong grounding in good communication with the MDT.
As a clinical nurse specialist I am used to clinical questions through the day, colleagues feel comfortable to raise question or concerns with me as I always practice in a non judgemental and considerate manner. There is an understanding that if I cannot answer a question that I will do my very best to find one via published guidelines or senior medics. I am often asked to take queries to the general CNS meeting and these have proved to be a valuable resource.
I am a strategic thinker and whilst I enjoy working as part of a team I recognise the need to regularly evaluate services in order to continue to deliver the best care possible. As a mentor to staff in my team I take the opportunity to engage colleagues on their ideas for change, to better the service and working relationships. I believe this empowers people in their ability and encourages collaboration. I regularly undertake personal and professional development plans with colleagues and take the opportunity to get to know them better including their future goals.
As part of the CNS team at Blackpool I have been managing my own workload, working autonomously on various projects including audit, staff training and MDT meetings. Occasionally I have had to delegate tasks to the wider team and set and establish priorities based on deadlines or level of importance.
I have shown the ability to influence and communicate at a senior level, contributing at meetings, communicating via email and on teams. I am an excellent communicator and pride myself on being approachable and sensitive with a warm manner.
I have worked in two care homes in my career and have always felt it was somewhere my personal skillset was suited. I would love the opportunity to implement positive changes in the this setting again.
I am a proactive and reliable member of the team, I am flexible and I own my own car. I hope I will be considered for this post.
