In July of 2024 I participated in a placement at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with the Doctors@Work programme which provides work experience for aspiring doctors. During this placement I shadowed general surgeons which allowed to me to gain valuable insight into the fast-paced and demanding environment of healthcare. I observed patient consultations and team discussions, which deepened my understanding of how doctors diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. I also witnessed the importance of clear communication, empathy, and collaboration among staff. This experience strengthened my interest in medicine and gave me a clearer picture of the dedication and skill required to care for patients effectively. During this placement I also learned the importance of working as a team and the impact that has on the public
To gain experience in community medicine I shadowed a GP in Nairn to better understand the difference between primary and secondary care. During my time in Nairn I went on home visits and this allowed me to see first hand the effect of poverty and isolation on health. After reflecting on my experience shadowing a GP, I have left with a greater understanding of the role of the GP helping individual patients, but also the effect they have on the wider community.
During my time at Ashley House I helped care for patients with dementia. This included talking to them about their lives and experiences and helping them at dinner. I volunteered at this care home for just over six months and it helped me gain insight into caring for the elderly, helped me work on my communication skills and the need to be patient and understanding.
