I have supported people with learning disabilities in my last job which I held for 12 years and learned lots of useful skills and training that would be transferable to doing this support role from day activities like helping clear and cook to the fun stuff of going to the beach or swimming.
I had training in advance first aid which I used in my home life with my family and friends.
In my role of support worker I had to write daily notes on the people I supported from what they ate and times they took medication and all the other activities they had done throughout the day.
I also had the responsibility of checking their money and the house money that they would pay in to which shopping and bills would be paid from to keep the house running and them not falling in to debt.
I was also there to provide emotional support for things that had upset them, had scared them, made them angry or happy. This could be by listening and offering different ways to deal with the issue or by helping them speak to the person who has caused them to feel the way they wear.
I work in the sortation department where i help load trailers with full pallets of parcels that then go to the customers.
I use RDT's which is a hand held computer that scans the bar codes on the parcels and also lets me scan the pallets to the shoots for the parcels to fall off the belt and also scan them to storage areas.
I'm also trained to use a ppt which is an electric pallet truck and electric pallet stacker. which helps me to load the trailers or van.
I also pack trained which means putting the items that need to be sent to the customers in bags or boxes which I then label.
I am also able to drive the companies vans to deliver items to different companies.
Learning who to use different machines in the machine shop that cut out the wooden frames and stands then have would silver fitted to them.
The machine where belt sanders and stand drills along with saws.
Learnt how to drive a bus pasted theory test but failed the driving tested of the bus.
Was a trainee butcher that learned how to cut all the different meats and also packed it up and priced it. Did stocking take to order stock for the butchery department.
Worked on the fish bar as a full fishmonger doing all the filleting of the different fishes, stocking shelves and doing stoke takes for the departments.
Worked in the petrol station doing money handling and all the other things that was important for the running of petrol station.
I have supported adults with learning difficulties in my past job and in that job role I had the responsibility of giving medication, handling of money and making updates to support plans and risk assessments
In the many years of support working I learned lots of ways to listen and understand the people I supported and staff I worked with
Understanding the language to use to talk with staff and the people I supported as not every one speaks the same way
Helping to be as proactive as possible so the person who's being supported to do things in a positive way and positive attitude
I have a full UK drives licence
I have a level 3 diploma in adult health and social care which I got while working at Mencap.
