This contract was taken with the primary aim to build out a market data team in a previously vendor managed site. Growing business and regulatory data demands required the engineering of a Market Data team from the ground up to better meet the banks needs. As a result a complete rebuild of all market data systems (TREP/Bloomberg) and time series systems (OneTick) was initiated. All services were migrated off vendor legacy hardware onto bank supported Linux platforms. Green field teams needed to be hired and trained from scratch in Copenhagen, Arhus and Vilnius (Lithuania) with no prior market data knowledge. Simon's strong technical background and depth of experience was seen as a key asset to achieve these objectives.
Originally hired to manage the Engineering team (8 engineers globally) role changed focus towards running the evaluation, selection and implementation of the next generation low latency market data platform for the bank. This involves all levels of technology from software to hardware to meet the desired objectives. Hardware
technologies range from FPGA/GPU Solutions to next generation network infrastructure (10 GigE/ Infini Band). Software solutions range from the traditional vendors next generation platforms to the more boutique low latency platforms. The role has been recently impacted by the off shoring of developer and L1 Market Data support to India. As a result a lot of time is now spent managing and training the staff of 3rd party outsourcing companies.
i). The internal redistribution of market data controls.
ii). Evaluation of virtualization and container technologies for the market data platform.
The role is focused around support of low latency trading and algo engines that source their pricing from the Wombat Feed and Superbook Infrastructure. The role leverage's my exchange knowledge to better understand the often subjective nature of exchange latency on platforms such as LSE, Chi-X, Euronext, LIFFE, CEF, Milan and OMX.
The team Simon primarily co-ordinate consists of 8 people supporting all MDS Systems front and back end systems. Simon was also deputy to the Market Data Services Manager with responsibility for two other additional teams, the TIB/RMDS Infrastructure Tea and the Reuters Software Engineering Teams. In total Simon was responsible for 17 Staff acting as the global hub for all market data activity. Responsibilities included coordinating new technical Market Data requirements from business areas that includes Futures, Equities, Derivatives, Fixed Income, FX, Venture Capital, Asset Management, Corporate Banking & Corporate Finance. The role was very hands on taking the main technical lead in project implementations and troubleshooting. This involved working closely with the TIB Infrastructure team of with RMDS/TIB/Rendezvous being the main Market Data Distribution & Market Making Platform for the Reuters RT, Kobra & Marketsheet Applications. The job function was to analyze and plan the implementation of these systems and to delegate and recruit where necessary. With Simon's
strong technical bias I was able to deliver a high quality of advice to the business in all their exchange and trading environments and ensure technical standards within the team. The applications the team supported numbered ~ 100 with the main focus being on Exchange / Trading systems e.g. GL, Fidessa, ION and the Reuters & Bloomberg, product range. The GL Trading system suite supported comprised of ~ 150 servers distributed across 4 Sites and 5 countries. The London office grew to be the global hub for Market Data Services and took the lead in in all Global Projects.
