I am currently in my first year as a Specialty Trainee in Renal Medicine, having joined the East of England Training Program in September 2024. After completing three years of internal medicine training in August 2023, I spent a year as an Educational Fellow in Renal Medicine at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This role further fueled my passion for renal medicine, a field that has intrigued me since my graduation from the University of Khartoum in January 2014. My early career, including foundation and senior house officer roles in renal departments, has only deepened this interest. A primary focus of mine is the continuous evaluation of care through audits, quality improvement initiatives, and the implementation of targeted interventions as well as suggesting recommendations.
During my time as an Educational Fellow, I led two key projects. The first involved evaluating departmental practices regarding the continuation of immunosuppression in patients returning to dialysis following a failed kidney transplant, resulting in the development of a new departmental Performa based on national recommendations. The second project entailed leading a local investigation as part of a national audit on Native Renal Biopsy Practices and Outcomes, which is currently in the analysis phase. I will continue contributing to drafting national guidelines for native kidney biopsies.
In my current role as a Renal Registrar, I completed an audit on departmental mortality for 2023 and 2024. Collaborating with the coding and clinical governance teams, we are identifying areas for improvement and implementing necessary changes. Additionally, I am leading the upcoming update of our renal microbiology guidelines, working closely with renal physicians, microbiologists, and pharmacists to revise the existing guidelines.
Beyond my clinical responsibilities, I serve as the Renal Trainee Representative on the Specialty Training Committee, a role that has enhanced my leadership abilities and strengthened my capacity to contribute to the development of high-quality renal training. This role differs from my previous direct educational roles, such as teaching third-year medical students at the University of Leicester during their renal placement and provision of virtual teaching to sixth-year medical students at Khartoum University during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I am confident that the KDIGO Guideline Methodology Fellowship will equip me with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the development and delivery of exemplary nephrology care. Starting this fellowship early in my nephrology career presents a valuable opportunity for progression to levels 3 and 4, while also strengthening my active involvement in shaping the future of nephrology, a key goal of mine
