The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory appointed Kelsen to construct an extension to their observatory in Dumfries and Galloway dark sky park. Client; SDSO, value £350k.
The first project completed by Kelsen was an art installation at Jupiter Artland in Edinburgh for Robert and Nick Wilson.
The project comprised a four sided concrete structure formed in board marked concrete with each layer reflecting a days work. The work was conceived by Nathan Coley who worked with Reiach and Hall Architects to develop the overall scheme deign with Kelsen assisting with the practicality of creating such a structure in the extremely sensitive Victorian woodland setting of Jupiter Artland. Client Jupiter Artland, value £150k.
Two further projects followed the success of the Nathan Coley installation - a complex steel grillage installation which was rock anchored to provide a below ground 'socket or shoe' for a giant replica of a shotgun by Corneila Parker. The gun in repose appears to be leaning against a tree within the woodland.
Finally we are appointed to construct a below ground chamber with a sloping access for a work by Anya Gallacio which was clad in amethysts sitting within a field of obsidian.
Our reputation for such work developed and a personal highlight was the development and costing for the installation of a huge sculpture by Richard Serra. Few contractors internationally have work on Richard Serra installations. A fully devised scheme was commissioned by the client involving six months of dedicated work. The client ultimately decided not to progress the installation.
