As a Trades Assistant in the rail industry, I supported skilled tradespeople in the construction, maintenance and repair of rail infrastructure. My role included a variety of hands-on tasks with a focus on safety, efficiency and teamwork. Key responsibilities included:

Assisting with installation, maintenance and repair of rail infrastructure, including tracks, signals & drainage.

Laying and maintaining pipes for drainage, utilities and other rail-related systems, ensuring correct alignment and placement according to specifications.

Operating hand and power tools safely to assist tradespeople with tasks such as welding, mechanical repairs and other maintenance procedures.

Handling and transporting materials, ensuring proper inventory management and safe delivery of equipment to job sites.

Preparing work sites by clearing obstacles, setting up necessary equipment and assisting with site set up and breakdown.

Collaborating with engineers, supervisors and other tradespeople to ensure timely completion of projects and adherence to safety standards.

Following all safety protocols and industry regulations to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.

Conducting routine maintenance on machinery, tools and equipment performing minor repairs and ensuring they were in good working condition.

Keeping accurate records of material used, daily activities and equipment checks.

This role further enhanced my knowledge of rail construction and different regulations and broadened my knowledge as the experience was in Australia.

In my role as a Jet Vac Driver/Jet Vac Operator/ Drainage Engineer at Shovlin Plant Hire, I was responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of jet vacuum equipment used for cleaning, maintaining and clearing drainage systems and pipes. I was involved in both field operations on the railway & civils, also on-site troubleshooting to ensure efficient and safe drainage management.

Key responsibilities included:

Operating jet vac units to clear blockages, remove debris and clean drainage pipes, manholes, culverts and other water systems across various construction and maintenance sites.

Managing and operating high-pressure water jetting equipment to effectively clear and clean drainage systems and underground infrastructure.

Ensuring all equipment including the jet vac units, hoses and safety gear was properly maintained and regularly inspected and kept in optimal working condition.

Transporting and setting up the jet vac unit at various sites, ensuring safe efficient operation while adhering to site-specific health and safety protocols.

Collaborating with site managers and engineers to plan and execute drainage maintenance projects ensuring all work was completed on time and in accordance with project specifications.

Performing emergency response drainage clearance during adverse weather conditions or unexpected blockages ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

Accurately completing daily reports, tracking maintenance work, material usage and equipment performance to ensure smooth project delivery.

Maintaining compliances with all safety regulations and environmental standards while operating high-pressure equipment and working in confined spaces.

This role enabled me to gain key experience in the railway industry as well as some civils insight. It allowed me to develop technical skills in drainage engineering while working with equipment to ensure effective and reliable drainage solutions.

As a landscaper I was responsible for designing, creating and maintaining aesthetically pleasing and functional outdoor spaces for residential and commercial clients. My role involved a mix of hands-on physical work and being creative towards different projects.

Managing and working on hardscaping projects, including the installation of pathways, retaining walls, fences and decorative stonework.

Maintaining accurate records of materials, equipment usage and project timelines to ensure efficiency and client satisfaction.

Collaborating with other team members to complete projects within the set timelines to ensure efficiency and client satisfaction.

Ensuring all work areas were clean, organized and safe. Complying with health and safety guidelines at all times.
