Work History

Ballast Control Operator

DIAMOND OFFSHORE DRILLING LTD
03.2014 - 06.2024
  • A Ballast Control Operator is a crucial role in offshore drilling operations, especially on semi-submersible rigs, floating production units and other mobile offshore drilling units.
  • Responsible for maintaining the stability, trim and overall structural integrity of the rig through careful control of ballast and bilge systems.
  • Operate and monitor ballast pumps, valves and tanks to adjust the rigs balance, trim and draft. This is vital for ensuring the platform remains stable and secure, especially in adverse weather conditions.
  • Regularly monitor and adjust the rigs trim and heel to keep it balanced as per operational needs and oversee the weight distribution across the rig by controlling ballast tanks, ensuring the platform maintains stability in changing loads, sea conditions and while the crew move equipment.
  • Daily review and verification of the stability program based on tank levels, sea conditions and current cargo or drilling loads.
  • Working primarily in the ballast control room monitoring alarms, gauges and real time data on vessel stability, ballast tank levels and environmental factors.
  • Conduct routine checks and inspections of ballast and bilge systems including pumps, actuated valves and the control panel to ensure it is in good working order.
  • In the case of an emergency, such as a blow out or severe weather event I would initiate emergency ballast operations to maintain or quickly restore stability.
  • Participate and help co-ordinate safety drills, including ballast related emergency scenarios ensuring the correct information is relayed to senior management to assist in decision making.
  • Frequently communicate with marine supervisors and drilling crews to co-ordinate operations that may impact the rigs stability such as crane operations, heavy lifts or loading bulk consumables from the platform supply vessel.
  • Maintaining accurate logs and reports on ballast and bilge operations, incidents and status updates. These records are critical for environmental compliance, maintenance and operational planning, these logs are required by international maritime laws, especially in environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Logging and auditing the Permit to Work system which is a fundamental part of the safety culture onboard oil rigs and manages high-risk activities, to minimise potential hazards and is crucial to protect workers, the environment and the infrastructure.

  • This role requires technical knowledge, problem solving skills, attention to detail & certification.
  • Having attended college for two years I obtained a SVQ in Domestic Natural Gas Installation.
  • I hold certificates such as Gas Safe Registration.
  • As a central heating engineer, I specialised in the installation, maintenance and repair of gas central heating systems.
  • I set up boilers, radiators, pumps and controls for new and existing heating systems as well as diagnostic testing and replacing damaged components as necessary.
  • I conducted safety checks for potential hazards, such as gas leaks or carbon monoxide emissions.
