Teacher of English · Full-time

Wellacre Academy
Manchester
09.2024 - 08.2025
  • School Overview: Wellacre Academy is a secondary school which especially values honesty, pride, respect, aspiration and resilience.
  • Within my role, I am responsible for the delivery of all Key-stage 3 and 4 English Schemes of learning (both English Literature and Language), as well as the creation of tailored schemes. As part of this process, regular and strong team communication and planning was necessary to meet our objective of a standardised delivery of learning across the department as a whole. As a qualified teacher, this role requires extensive data tracking, deadline management, coordinating resources, maintaining records and effectively communicating both within teams and with the public.

Throughout my year of full-time, qualified teaching, I have learnt that a valuable skill, alongside the usual technological and organisational skills, multi-tasking, and leadership- is patience. I can confidently pride myself on this often-forgotten skill, as I consider it to be the backbone to effective learning and making sure no learner is left behind.

  • Extracurricular: Throughout the entirety of the academic year, every Wednesday from 3 pm-4 pm, I managed a 'Creative Writing' club. Students would attend this session to enter a space that demanded their imaginations to take over and manifest into written pieces. We explored genres ranging from the Gothic, Science fiction, Dystopia to simple but effective immersive descriptive writing based on artwork. These sessions were paramount for myself and students to keep the spark of creativity alive and to display the value of the ability to write effectively.

Trainee Teacher of English · Teaching

North Durham Academy
Durham
01.2024 - 06.2024
  • School Overview: A secondary school in the North-East of England, with a vision of providing outstanding care, high standards and a broad curriculum for its students and staff.

  • As a trainee at the school, I delivered the national English Literature and Language curriculum as well as personally created schemes of learning tailored to a wide variety of academic abilities, for the purpose of teaching Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' and poetry from AQA's 'Power & Conflict' anthology. I worked as a member of the English department to navigate a harmonious delivery of the curriculum to ensure equal opportunities and accessibility for all students. I strengthened my dedication to teamwork and actualising shared goals through weekly departmental meetings used for gauging the progression of learning across the department and for delivering CPD.

  • Extracurricular: To enrich my experience at North Durham Academy, I accompanied the head of the English department in delivering English exam revision sessions for KS4. This experience guided me in shaping my own approach to revision and taught me how to 'stream-line' learning for the purpose of examinations, when necessary. As an example of an effective technique, each student in the group was assigned a quotation that was associated with themselves from Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', students then knew that if that specific student's name was called, they were to recite the quotation assigned to them.

Trainee Teacher of English · Teaching

Gateshead College
Gateshead, Newcastle
09.2023 - 12.2023
  • School Overview: A further education college, offering further education for 16-18-year-olds as well as higher education, apprenticeships, part-time adult learning and training for employers.

  • During my time as a trainee teacher of English at Gateshead College, my position required high-quality and assessed curriculum delivery through in-person and virtual presentations. In addition to this, I was required to independently produce presentation materials in line with national guidelines for curriculum. This experience demanded strong capabilities in presenting, organisation, time-management and efficient communication skills due to working between two sites and delivering ninety-minute sessions at each site.

Furthermore, I was familiarised with and assessed on hybrid teaching and class content organisation, both via Google Classroom. This is a valuable skill as within our technologically reliant society, the importance of being able to navigate and provide accessible learning via online platforms is increasingly important.

  • Extracurricular: As my goal in this role was primarily to teach and guide students aiming to resit their GCSE English Language qualification, I administered and delivered revision sessions in addition to the sessions I was time-tabled to deliver as the summer exam-period approached.
