Skills

  • Calm under pressure, I have always been able to consider how to deal with pressure, even if that comes suddenly out of the blue with potentially serious ramifications Examples include: cancellation of an evening examination by the invigilator, the fallout from which I managed and resulted in an outcome which soothed the feathers of all concerned including the Students' Union Handling senior staff in difficult conversations when their approach and methods have failed during quality assurance visits are another example
  • Problem-solving: having had senior roles in University and also in the various roles for awarding bodies, problems arise all the time I analyse the issue and evaluate different possible outcomes, where appropriate consulting senior managers, my colleagues and those for whom I am responsible to ensure the best outcome
  • Communication skills: I communicate clearly although as someone with mild dyslexia, I do try and put things away for an hour or so or ask a colleague to read it to check for errors This is an example of problem solving, at school it was considered to be carelessness, but I learned to cope myself through trial and error and found these two approaches through solving my own problems
  • Public speaking: I have spoken at various education and non-education meetings and events for many years and rarely need notes I always remind myself of the advice of a colleague before I gave my first major speech, "Remember, Saundra", he said, "the roar of acclamation following any speech is almost always inversely proportional to the length of the speech itself" One of the most useful pieces of advice I have ever received It works
  • Team building: Throughout my career as I progressed to more senior roles I have worked hard to build teams, one of my former administrator, after all these years, still emails to tell me I was "the best boss" she ever had I always make clear that the buck stops with me If I am unhappy with an issue, I will discuss it in detail but in private I also treat them with respect and encourage them to come to by with problems or ideas and never make them feel anything but valued team members I thank them for a job well done as well as asking for improvements or changes
  • Strategic planning: I have written plans for local association of a political party as well as written plans for degree programmes, both new and under revision I have recently used this when working with Cambridge International on collaborations in different parts of the World where discussions took place on what support and type of support should or could be given and also the likelihood of success in difficult areas
  • Leadership: I have led teams both within academe and also in local politics and I always lead from the front, I take the brickbats and discuss the way forward with my teams and I give them support and also the credit for what they suggest or achieve I find this is not always the case with others who have been my leaders Some are, alas, more than willing to claim the glory but not the issues which arise
  • Resourcefulness
  • Quality Assurance
  • Programme development
