A penultimate-year BSc Mathematics student with strong numerical and analytical skills, currently looking into getting into actuarial work. My degree has developed my problem-solving ability through mathematical modelling and statistical thinking, while a previous role in a busy distribution centre has strengthened my resilience, organisation and teamwork. I am motivated by the opportunity to apply my quantitative skills to real-world pension and risk problems and to learn more about the actuarial profession in a close-knit team.
•Worked as part of a warehouse team handling stock, processing deliveries and preparing orders to meet daily targets.
• Regularly given responsibility for coordinating a team of up to 7 colleagues during shifts, allocating tasks and monitoring progress to ensure work was completed accurately and on time.
• Developed strong teamwork, communication and practical leadership skills by supporting colleagues and resolving day-to-day issues.
• Maintained high standards of accuracy and organisation while working under time pressure and meeting performance targets.
• Demonstrated reliability, positive attitude and the self-discipline to follow procedures carefully – all important in handling detailed numerical work.
Numerical and Analytical Skills
BSc Mathematics has strengthened my numerical ability and confidence with abstract and applied problem-solving
Experience using mathematical models to analyse real-world style problems and interpret results
Comfortable working with data, formulas and structured calculations in both handwritten and computer-based work
Problem-Solving and Agile Thinking
Group modelling project required breaking down complex tasks, testing different approaches and checking results critically
Used initiative in the warehouse to deal with day-to-day challenges (eg workload changes, missing items) while keeping to targets
Enjoy considering challenges from different angles and finding practical, well-reasoned solutions
Communication
Experience explaining mathematical ideas to peers during group work and presenting modelling outcomes clearly
Produce clear written work using LaTeX, structuring arguments so they are easy to follow
Communicated instructions and feedback to colleagues at TJX, helping them understand priorities and next steps
Self-Discipline and Organisation
Balancing a demanding STEM degree with independent study has developed my time-management and focus
Consistently met deadlines for assignments and assessments, planning work in advance
At TJX, maintained productivity and accuracy over long shifts while following health and safety procedures carefully
IT and Technical Skills
MATLAB – used for numerical calculations and simple simulations as part of my mathematics degree
LaTeX – regularly used to create professional-quality mathematical documents and reports
Confident with everyday software such as Microsoft Word and Excel (tables, formulas, charts) and PowerPoint for presentations
