My role as a band 3 senior health care assistant on a orthopaedic trauma consists of providing care for pre and post op for patients who have sustained a traumatic orthopaedic trauma.
The tasks I carry out for the patients I'm caring for is helping patients with personal care as and when needed, while promoting independence. Assisting patients to change into surgical gowns pre surgery, as well as helping patients in or out of day and nightwear during their recovery. Assisting patients with eating their meals and having drinks ad hoc, while encouraging patients to keep up their oral intake. Assisting patients to mobilize as and when required while following the care plan set out by the physio and occupational therapists.
I am also responsible for carrying out observations at set intervals these include post surgical enhanced observations and reporting any anomalies to the nurse and doctor (if on the ward) caring for the patient.
I am also responsible for venipuncture, carrying out ECG's, inserting cannulas as well as over all cannula care, Preforming bladder scans and reporting my findings to the nurse caring for the patient and inserting a catheter when needed, as well as preforming catheter care.
I care for a diverse range of patients, who have individual needs, this means I have to adapt my approach to patients individual care. It is important to gain the trust of patients and families by maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in all situations.
When assisting in an emergency situation it is important I maintain calm and professional, while working as part of a multi discipline team(MDT). Follow instructions and carry out life saving tasks while working under pressure.
When caring for end-of-life care it is important the care is delivered in a compassionate, respectful manor while maintaining dignity of the individual at all times.

My responsibilities included, checking patients visual acuity, colour vision, eye pressures using Icare, carrying out visual field tests, administering dilating drops. preparing cataract consent packs in preparation for surgery and laser treatment consent packs. Uploading patient test results onto medisight as well as recording test results in patients medical notes. Contacting wards to ensure inpatients are well enough to attend their appointment in outpatients.
Cleaning down all clinical areas, collecting in all medical notes at the end of the clinic and taking them to the PPC's.
Ensuring transport patients are made priority to ensure they are seen in a timely manner and made ready to return home as quickly as possible. ordering snack packs for inpatients and transport patients who have missed a meal and or diabetic.
