Motivated and passionate lead physiologist with over 25 years of experience in Cardiology. Specialist in echocardiography and leading the echo service to provide quality care in a busy NHS department. Responsible for the development of the echo service within the cardio-respiratory Department ensuring professional standards are upheld.
Perform, report and teach all aspects of echo to numerous in- house trainees and doctors working towards their BSE accreditation.
Work closely with the service manages, consultant cardiologists and senior physiologists in echo, regarding waiting times, capacity issues and service developments as well as clinical input for patient management.
Initiate and run physiology led valve clinics.
Check and sign off BSE log books both at level one and level two. Perform and report adult and paediatric echos to a high standard in line with BSE standards.
Act as a professional role model to the echo team, admin support teams and HCAs, ensuring the Trust values are upheld. Provide in house training lectures to both physiologists and doctors. Check and sign off non accredited staff reports providing feedback and teaching points. Deliver hands on training for ETP students.
Run weekly MDT meetings giving advice and feedback both clinically and technically.
Partake in the recruitment, appraisal and attendance management for echo staff.
Advising doctors and GPs on patients diagnosis and time frame for follow-up.
Triaging of referrals.
Setting up new services such as Physiology lead valve clinics and TOE services.
Dealing with echo complaints both from patients and staff. Ensure equipment is serviced, and deal with any issues to allow minimal loss of capacity resulting from equipment failures. Heavily involved in the evaluation and purchasing of new equipment - including testing new machines and producing justifications needed for equipment purchase. Ensure equipment is serviced, deal with issues to allow minimal loss of capacity in the event of equipment failure.
To oversee the development of the echo service within the cardio-respiratory department. Work closely with the Directorate's Senior Management Team, Consultant Cardiologists and Lead Physiologists for Echocardiography regarding waiting times, capacity issues and service developments.
Ensure services were delivered in an integrated and cost-efficient manner.
Work with the Performance Manager on capacity issues, service development requirement, equipment replacement etc in a timely manner to ensure capacity was maximised and maintained at all times.

Autonomously perform diagnostic procedures specialising in echocardiography for both adults and paediatrics. Lead a physiology lead valve clinic. Provide rapid and accurate interpretation and reports using clinical data from diagnostic tests as well as from clinical observations. If appropriate, suggest further patient management. Discuss procedure results with cardiologists and cardiac registrars and advise patients of results leading to management decisions. Ensure that results are made available to referrers in a timely fashion. Supervise formal training and assessments for other cardiac physiologists. Implement and deliver echo training programmes for both training physiologist and specialist registrars. Encourage and support staff to obtain BSE accreditation. Marking log books. Participating in on-call for both adult and paediatric emergencies. Write standard operating procedures to help maintain department standards. Participate in the day-to-day running of the department and deputise for the Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist with regards to sickness and lieu time, ensuring the smooth running of a quality service. Monitor the appropriateness of referrals, obtaining information relevant to patient care, interpreting and reporting clinical findings and ensuring appropriate discharge or ongoing care through a valve register. Teaching and support, to all members of the department and medical staff who are learning echocardiography and undertaking BSE. Research, write and deliver lectures on subjects within the BSE curriculum and paediatric echo. Formally assess physiologist and registrars with in house assessments throughout training and to sign off. Mentor junior staff. Review Echoes and reports performed by others and provide advice and support. Perform junior staff appraisals (Band 5 and 6) in line with NUH Trust and policy, setting out SMART objectives. Recruitment and selection of junior NUH staff. Participate in regular appraisals with Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist.
Perform, analyse and report routine cardiac diagnostic tests as required such as ECG, ambulatory ECG, and BP monitoring. Perform and report treadmill exercise tests, acting as the lead physiologist. Perform and report head up tilt table tests. Perform Radionuclide Stress tests as required. Perform complex and advanced procedures eg echocardiography, pacing, and cardiac cath lab. Provide factual reports on outcomes. Participate in the out of hours on call service. Train junior staff in ETT, ambulatory ECG
and BP monitoring. Develop skills in more advance echo techniques such as stress echo.
Perform routine ECGs. Perform ambulatory ECG and BP monitoring and to analyse results.
Perform a full range of ETT's clinician and technician lead. To perform Thallium tests and bike/pharmacological tests. To provide the technical cover and support for tilt
table tests. To progress in echocardiography with a degree of autonomy formulating reports for sign off. To progress in cardiac catheterisation with a degree of autonomy in both left and right heart catheters. To progress in pacing implantation and follow up with a degree of autonomy. Any other duties reasonably required of this grade.
Perform ECG's, ambulatory ECG, BP monitoring, 24 hour tape analysis. Provide support for ETTs and tilt table test. Progress through echo under supervision. Progress through cardiac catheterisation under supervision. Progress through pacing follow up under supervision. To complete ACT examination and attend courses both internally and externally relevant to job.
