As a Functional Skills English and Culture Tutor for the 2025 Gurkha intake into the British Army, I planned and delivered English lessons tailored to ESOL learners, focusing on practical communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. I differentiated instruction to support varying proficiency levels and designed a bespoke cultural orientation programme to aid recruits in adapting to British values, customs, and societal expectations. My approach incorporated inclusive, learner-centred strategies and formative assessment to track progress and provide targeted support. Working closely with military staff, I helped recruits develop the language skills and cultural awareness necessary for successful integration into both the Army and wider UK society.
