Skills

I qualified as a registered learning disability nurse in September 2019 Whilst I had a passion for working with patients with a learning disability, I knew I wanted to work in a more general setting and so applied for a job at Aintree Hospital I was successful in gaining the post and was allocated to work on a general medicine ward where I completed my full years preceptorship Whilst working on the ward, I found I had a keen eye for spotting when a patient was deteriorating and found I was able to work well in fast-paced situations which demanded efficient and rapid nursing care I developed an interest in acute and emergency nursing and successfully transferred to the emergency department in 2021

Since working in A&E I have dramatically improved my clinical skills and ability to recognise a critically unwell patient who is in need of prioritising I built up these skills working in the department over the last four years and have further enhanced my knowledge by attending as many courses as I could including Foundation Skills in Trauma Care, Nurse and Trauma Critical Care (NTACC), Fundamentals in Palliative and End of Life Care (University of Liverpool), the Emergency Care Course (Liverpool John Moores University) where I completed ALS and am now a certified ALS provider I have recently completed Clinical Assessment and Decision Making Level 7 module at LJMU and eventually would like to complete the whole Advanced Clinical Practice Masters Degree

I achieved my band 6 role in July of 2023 and since then have greatly enhanced my triage skills, which involves identifying or excluding red flag symptoms of serious illnesses I am able to competently stream patients to the appropriate department whether that be A&E, majors, resus or minor injuries/SDUCU (Same day urgent care centre) When working in SDUCU triage it is my responsibility to ascertain from a brief description given by the patient whether they have a simple issue that can be managed by the GP, minor injuries service or ACP or whether they will require further diagnostics and interventions and need to be streamed back to ED

I have also taken on the role of student link nurse to improve my managerial skills by completing allocation of mentors, doing the student off-duty and dealing with any issues or complaints from registered staff and students within the department My managerial skills have been further enhanced by leading small teams in areas of the department, ensuring each patient is allocated a suitably trained nurse depending on how unwell they are

Whilst I love my current job, I am really keen to progress in my career and have more autonomy in my role by being able to assess and diagnose patients I one day hope to achieve my MSC in Advanced Clinical Practice and work as an ACP I have already completed the Clinical Assessment and Decision-Making module
