I have been a qualified Nurse for 36 years and a children's nurse for 27
years. My aim for completing my children's nurse training was to
work within Children's cancer care.
Through all my experience I have a depth of knowledge and
experience which lends itself perfectly to the Band 8a role.
During the last 4 years as a band 7 within the outreach team I have
cemented the skills needed to progress my career. I am able to work
autonomously and provide specialist care and knowledge, I can
effectively balance the demands of my caseload and prioritise care
where needed. I have provided learning opportunities for both staff
within paediatric oncology and to our shared care partners,
concentrating on palliative care and the challenges it brings. I have promoted and elevated the work done by Children's oncology Outreach team, again through teachings and group work. I able to respond to need as I have demonstrated in the development of the discharge checklist which has been adopted by the whole MDT. I have audited this and implemented change. This has led to further service development in the way that information is disseminated to families. I have worked closely with our current lead Nurse to develop team working with the aim to make the way the team works more sustainable. I have also had the opportunity to amend the Standard Operating Procedure for the key worker role.
Through the clinical work that I do I have expert knowledge in both
Children's cancer care and children's palliative care. This allows me to
expertly assess plan and implement the care that is needed, working
with families and other agencies.
My previous roles as well as my current role has given me extensive
experience of managing and leading a team. Completion of the Mary
Seacole leadership programme has cemented the knowledge I already
have as well as extending my knowledge.
I pride myself on being an enthusiastic member of a team who
contributes positive ideas. My personal values align closely with those of Leeds Teaching Hospital as well as the NHS.
Reflecting on my leadership style, I see myself as a compassionate leader. I pride myself on building relationships with those I work with, ensuring they feel valued and respected, which lends to team members working in a motivated and cohesive way.
