Work history

Consultant ENT/Head & Neck Surgeon

The Royal London Hospital & University College London Hospital
02.2016 - 03.2026
  • I am one of ten ENT consultants based at The Royal London Hospital, with a subspecialty focus in Head and Neck surgery. Cancer service provision is centralised at University College London Hospital, where I contribute to the multidisciplinary management of patients through regular attendance at weekly Thyroid and Head & Neck MDT meetings.
  • I participate in a 1:7 Head & Neck Consultant On-Call Rota at UCLH, providing specialist cover for complex emergency cases. The unit is a recognised training centre for higher surgical trainees on the North Thames ENT rotation, and I am actively involved in their supervision and training.
  • Currently I am one of the ten ENT consultant surgeons in Barts Health, with my main base hospital at The Royal London Hospital. I also hold an honorary contract at University College Hospital as this is where we provide tertiary level of head and neck cancer care.
  • I have a strong foundation in research as reflected by my peer reviewed publications and regular presentation at international meetings. I have also taken the time out of programme to learn more about this discipline from an academic viewpoint, having completed a Research Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC), New York. My surgical repertoire has been further refined working in two very reputable departments with Advanced Head and Neck Training. I believe that I am a conscientious, diligent individual who pursues excellence in all aspects of my life.

Head and Neck Fellow

Charing Cross Hospital
10.2015 - 02.2016
  • This fellowship was undertaken to gain further experience in craniofacial surgery and continue building operative volume in ablative head and neck procedures. Having previously completed a fellowship, this role allowed me to operate with a high degree of independence.
  • I regularly worked on established parallel operating lists alongside a senior consultant, which provided valuable opportunities to refine advanced surgical techniques and support the training of junior colleagues.
  • The unit's high surgical throughput ensured a consistently busy and challenging workload. Effectively managing this was a rewarding aspect of the role and contributed significantly to my professional growth.
  • I remained actively involved in teaching and research, with several projects accepted for presentation at upcoming international conferences. This post also included a general ENT on-call commitment, weekly head and neck MDT participation, and specialty clinics.
  • The fellowship concluded earlier than planned due to my appointment as a Locum Consultant.

Head and Neck Fellow

Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals
07.2014 - 10.2015
  • This was my first clinical fellowship following completion of core surgical training, undertaken at a high-volume tertiary centre specialising in complex head and neck pathology. The role involved a 6-month rotation across both ENT and Maxillofacial Surgery teams, under the supervision of Mr Ricard Simo and Mr Jean-Pierre Jeannon.
  • I gained extensive exposure to complex ablative procedures and microvascular reconstruction, and had the opportunity to consolidate and expand my surgical skills. I was actively encouraged to work with increasing autonomy, culminating in performing numerous cases independently on parallel operating lists with both teams.
  • The post included general ENT on-call rota, participation in a weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, and joint specialty clinics including thyroid, and head and neck.
  • In addition to clinical responsibilities, this fellowship marked a transition into a more senior teaching role. I provided regular teaching to senior registrars and successfully mentored several core trainees, some of whom have since progressed into ENT higher training.
  • I also proposed and facilitated a structural change in the on-call pathway for emergency referrals, which has since been implemented. I remained engaged in academic work, contributing to several research projects that were accepted for presentation at international meetings.

Research Fellowship

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
05.2010 - 05.2011
  • I undertook a one-year clinical research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, focusing primarily on malignant salivary gland cancers. My key objective was to develop an updated database of clinico-pathological factors and clinical outcomes, building on the seminal work of Spiro et al. from 1988. This project has resulted in multiple publications and international conference presentations.
  • Key Research Contributions: Clinical Outcomes Research: Developed a comprehensive database on malignant salivary gland tumours, leading to updated outcome analyses and new insights into disease behavior and prognosis.
  • Nomogram Development: Collaborated with the Cleveland Clinic biostatistics team to develop a nomogram predicting postoperative hypocalcaemia following thyroidectomy. I subsequently applied this methodology to create additional nomograms predicting recurrence and overall survival in salivary gland malignancies, aiding in risk stratification and patient counselling.
  • Innovative Surgical Education Tools: Contributed to the development of a hybrid simulator designed to train surgical trainees in microlaryngeal surgery, enhancing technical skill acquisition in a safe environment.
  • Biomarker and Imaging Research: Participated in cross-departmental research with radiology on the use of imaging biomarkers to better target nodal disease in head and neck cancers.
  • Quality of Life and Patient-Reported Outcomes: Conducted a baseline study on quality of life in thyroid cancer patients to better understand patient concerns post-thyroidectomy. This led to the development of Thyroid-Ex, a novel preoperative expectations questionnaire currently undergoing validation at MSKCC.
