At Quill Construction my job role includes analysing client specifications and proposed drawings for all new tenders that come in, providing cost effective and efficient estimates to meet the clients needs whilst making sure I can manage company profit margins and deliver the works as cost effective as possible. When advised my tender is most competitive i will then put together a detailed programme in which we will deliver the works and how each phase will be completed. When carrying out site surveys attention to detail is key as specific parts of an installation or building can alter any way in which we would intend to carry out a job as efficient as possible. I believe my journey from site operative to estimating has benefited to my success massively as I have a great understanding of how things work on site, good insight into problem solving and the ability of forward thinking and planning allowing me to avoid issues and problems that may arise during the construction stage. During my time I have worked on some prestigious jobs including refurb projects in schools, The Emirates Stadium, Pfizer HQ, Tony Blair Institute, Hospitals, The Natural History Museum and more. Building rapports and good working relationships with clients is very important which is why my personality and easy going nature is very helpful, I believe you need to have your clients trust and they need to feel they are important in order for me to get the best out of them and visa versa. I have also been involved in design and build projects in which I enjoy being responsible for providing our clients with the best materials, labour and time scales to meet budgets and margins. I put a lot of effort into design proposals and proposed drawings to give clients a real insight into how we will carry out a job, why we are capable of delivering the project to the highest standard and also providing value engineering options in order to save cost and time to a project which I also feel enables the client to trust me as I show I have covered every base and I am putting my time and effort into the project. Since starting with Quill Construction I have been commended for the percentage of works I have won which shows I am doing all the correct things and going about my work in the correct manor. I have gone out of my own way to book a course in Auto-Cad as I felt it would be more professional and beneficial for me as I wanted to be able to provide detailed as built drawing on completion of all projects. I am also willing to take any courses necessary to benefit my ongoing career in this field. I have excelled in every position I have ever been in and believe I would be an asset to any company.

This role has given me the freedom to run my sites how I see fit and it has allowed me to learn quickly and efficiently about what works best. I have gained valuable leadership skills and qualities and believe being firm but fair has worked well with all my engineers. I feel I have gained great respect from everyone around me and believe all the qualities I have now will enable me to be a great asset to anyone in my next challenge.
Dodd Group are an electrical contractor who are involved with Installation projects as well as the maintenance and install works on the MOD sites. I started with Dodd Group as an electrical engineer supervising the jobs I was given to look after. I quickly made a name for myself with Dodd Group due to my hard work, knowledge, can-do attitude, time management, productivity, problem solving and leadership qualities. I was quickly given bigger and bigger jobs to look after. I was looking after all aspects of electrical installation as well as surveying jobs, carrying out take off sheets, liaising with manufacturers and suppliers regarding products and equipment, ordering materials, estimating, analysing drawings, putting together work programmes, arranging sub-contractors and dealing with all aspects of electrical install works on all jobs I was looking after. Dodd Group then won contracts looking after two American army bases (Lakenheath and Mildenhall) and I was then asked if I would manage install works over there. Due to the workload I was willing to take on and how well I was doing on site this lead to outstanding appraisals from my superiors and being told I am a great asset to the company. I gained a passion for managing and looking after high end projects and felt I was able to take on as much work as they wanted to give me because I have always had the attitude that anything can be achieved if you work hard enough for it and my drive and determination consistently enables me to exceed expectation.
At B H Electrical Ltd my role included taking complete control of jobs from estimating and liaising with the office to actually carrying out the work and signing off jobs ready for handover. Works ranged from small conservatories to large office block newbuilds and warehouse installs. Assessing all aspects of the job was vital to ensure no mistakes were made and every decision was for thought. Being efficient was crucial for the success of myself and the business therefore time, labour, materials, equipment, prices and the methodology of the job needed to be considered thoroughly. Testing and inspection was again a big part of my role and my previous knowledge had set me up well to complete EICR's in a timely and efficient manner and whenever my certs were submitted to the office there were never any mistakes and was told on various occasions that my paper work was second to none therefore showing my attention to detail and organised working.
During my time with Kiasu Group I was involved in a lot more complex wiring systems and machinery and it wasn't just your standard install works although I did carry this out also. My job role consisted of working on faulty plant and machinery and complex systems such as access control, CCTV, door entry systems, disabled alarm systems, building management systems, intelligent lighting systems such as DALI, HELVAR and ESYLUX, UPS systems, ventilation and A/C. With every job I was given I was in control of sourcing materials taking into account price, quality and lead time delivery, liaising with clients to arrange dates and times of work commencement, managing my own workload, managing van stock, dealing with manufacturers and suppliers, client facing, delivering work within the specified timescale, testing, fault finding, EICR's, minor works certificates. All work I was involved in required a lot of referencing back to the IET wiring regulations which improved my knowledge a great deal.
During my time as a site foreman for Hanover my role included overseeing works, delegating tasks, analysing drawings, making sure we are on track to meet deadline dates, attending weekly progress meetings, meeting targets according to the work programme, hosting and monitoring visiting contractors, managed on site inductions and safety briefings to ensure full staff compliance, liaising with clients and other contractors, completing take off sheets, sourcing materials, dealing with health and safety on site and generally looking after the day to day running of site and delivering the best possible service. All the above tasks enhanced my skillset massively including attention to detail, problem solving, time management, productivity, initiative, professional approach, people skills, understanding of client wants and needs and much more.
Hanover Electrical is a large installation company specialising in domestic, commercial and industrial projects.
During my time at Hanover I was thrown straight in at the deep end carrying out works I had not yet learned in my studies. My apprenticeship programme was so fast paced it put me in a desirable position when it came to my written and practical lessons in college as I had already been involved in so many situations in which I had already obtained the knowledge for my study work. It became apparent fairly early at college I was grasping information and manual skills much quicker than my surrounding classmates due to the type of work I was lucky enough to be involved in and the tasks I was trusted with to carry out. As a first year apprentice you are normally just a helping hand passing tools, moving materials, helping with manual tasks but for me this wasn't the case. I took the time to analyse drawings, understand wiring methods, look into circuitry and how everything worked and before I knew it I was taking my own initiative with complex tasks to the surprise of my colleagues. This was quickly recognised by my superiors and from passing comments and review meetings I understood I was very highly regarded at Hanover which felt very rewarding at such as early stage in my career. As time went on and my hard work continued I was awarded the chance to look after sections of jobs by myself for example, at the start of my second year we were working on a block of luxury apartments on the river in Greenwich and I was looking after the underground car park which involved containment, wiring, fire alarm, lighting, power, EV charging points etc. Testing and fault finding quickly became second nature and diagnosing faults and rectifying them became much simpler. My standard of work and speed in which I could carry it out quickly caught the attention of my director which lead to me achieving 7 apprentice of the month awards in one single year and considering I was one of five apprentices it was a great feeling that I was excelling in my role. Towards the last year of my apprenticeship I was asked to take on much more responsibility which involved delegating work to subcontractors and colleagues, carrying out handover meetings, attending pre-start meetings, carrying out progress meetings with clients, assessing methods of problem solving and much more. As I came out of my time as an apprentice I was asked if I would be interested in taking my career down the site foreman route which is where I always thought I was heading anyway which was great for my progression. I have been involved in very prestigious jobs including equestrian centres, schools, luxury apartment blocks, multi-million pound houses, museums and much more which has benefited my skill set in abundance.
