Ruth Waters

Registered nurse RNLD
Lincoln

Summary

After leaving school the majority of my work experience lies in biological sciences and research. I then diversified when moving to Lincolnshire and began my career path working with people with learning disabilities and co-morbid mental health issues. Initially with was in an educational setting where I was a care co-ordinator working for Linkage College in Toynton near Spilsby, Lincs. With my passion for understanding how we all work as human beings, I was drawn to taking my nursing degree in order to develop a greater knowledge of how to assess, support and enable people with complex needs.

Having gained a first class honours degree and being proud to be an RNLD, I have continued with my focus on helping those within my care, to reach their potential. This continues to be achieved through robust assessment, risk management, working with allied professionals and offering empowering therapeutic interventions. I have been able to diversify my knowledge through working within mental health settings and within physical healthcare integrated teams. I continue to access c.p.d opportunities as I enjoy learning new skills and applying evidence based practises.

I have never felt more passionate about continuing to support people to live a fulfilling life. I have a range of skills now that serve people well every day of my working life. I receive much positive feedback about my approaches, my ability to treat all patients with respect and dignity, to have the ability to listen and communicate effectively.

These skills I believe will continue to serve me well and those I aim to support, in current and new environments.

Work History

Neurodiversity practitioner

Notts healthcare NHS foundation trust (HMP North Sea Camp)
Boston, LIN
11.2017 - Current

As a neuro-diversity practitioner working within the mental health team, I have responsibility for screening, assessment and diagnosis of patients with ADHD, screening for ASD and co-facilitation of the ADOS formal diagnostic process and the screening of patients with learning disabilities. It is my responsibility to ensure the patients are supported appropriately by the extended Multi-disciplinary team on site and that interventions are offered particular to the individuals needs. I develop support plans with the patients, shared with partner agencies to ensure the most effective support is offered to them. My responsibilities extend to the community where referrals for support on release from prison are made and partner agencies worked with for best outcomes.

I also deliver therapeutic interventions in my own right. I have been offering Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) within my position for the NHS for over 4 years and am now an accredited clinical hypnotherapist with my own part time private caseload.

I have taken the lead in offering short talks with regard to neurodiversity and childhood trauma. I have also delivered ACT training to other professionals in allied prisons.
