Compliance Monitoring Analyst

Working as a compliance monitoring analyst at an ACD, Investment Manager and Platform.

Responsibilities included:

  • Conducting solo and joint monitoring reviews across the the group – including Client Money , Fund Liquidity, BCP&DR, Best Execution, Fund Pricing and Accounting, Product Governance, GDPR, IBP, T&C, Market Abuse, Value Assessments, Remuneration and IFPR.1
  • Leading joint-reviews across the business and ensuring that work was appropriately structured and delegated to deliver a coherant message.
  • Engaging in coaching to help train others in compliance monitoring methodology, and preparing materials, and running sessions in support of that.
  • Providing peer review, support and guidance to colleagues as a compliance monitoring SME.
  • Drafting documentation in support of the department including guidance materials, sampling methodology, test plan templates, and testing templates.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Skilled in subject matter research, business intelligence and rule identification, and drafting of core documentation such as the terms of reference and final report.
  • Solid knowledge of systems and control environments, and knowing how to identify weaknesses in areas such as governance, documentation, operational activities and risk management.
  • Experienced in review testing methodology – including interviews, walkthroughs, documentation reviews and sampling amongst others.
  • Good drafting skills with the ability to write formal reports to senior management, as well as convey more delicate messages via other communication mediums.

Acted as compliance analyst in an advisory capacity across the commercial division of a large UK merchant bank with a focus on consumer lending. Responsibilities included:

  • Provided a full range of compliance advisory service on systems and controls, conflicts of interest, insurance, information requirements, product governance, employee conduct, customer journey, financial promotions, gifts and hospitality and complaints, amongst others.
  • Completed a variety of thematic reviews, gap analysis and compliance projects initiated independently and also in support of business initiatives. Following a gap analysis on insurance practice I delivered findings and actions to bring the business into compliance with IDD requirements, and to head-off materialising risks.
  • Developed and improved internal compliance processes and infrastructure including culture dashboards, complaints and CBT metrics, gifts and hospitality as well as a full refresh of conflicts of interest. Worked extensively with marketing to produce internal and external guidance on Financial Promotions and to improve our internal process for approvals.
  • Delivered timely board back updates, regulatory returns and metrics; and reviewing regulatory documents from the FCA and other bodies and advising on impacts and time-lines.
  • Effectively represented compliance at board level, presenting compliance updates based on horizon scanning, business and compliance initiatives, risk assessments and trend analysis.
  • Complemented by strong CCA awareness, intimately familiar with credit and hire regulated documents and comfortable liaising with external legal counsel.
  • Acting as a business partner with influencing skills that allow for continued positive relationships with other business units while clearly communicating regulatory requirements.

Business Analyst / Documentation Manager

Delivered a suite of regulated and unregulated agreements nationwide that included a full regulatory, legal and design refresh. This involved the following achievements and activities:

  • Massively improved the customer journey by cutting the size of the documents by a third, reducing our legal and regulatory risk, and incorporating automation elements.
  • Completed a business case, data analysis , high-level presentations, extensive analysis of document T&Cs, competitor analysis, requirements gathering, and subsequent workshops to capture high-level decisions, departmental, operational and sales input to deliver a vastly improved set of documents.
  • Liaised extensively with external legal counsel to navigate FCA regulatory expectations and tricky areas of the CCA and GDPR for credit and hire agreements. More broadly: working with every area of the business affected by the change in documentation to add, improve, remove and retire products or document elements where they were redundant or unnecessary.
  • Identified pain-points, collated information and communicated my strategy /options for resolving them effectively to senior management and others. I know the importance of consulting widely, addressing change anxiety, gaining buy-in and making decisions to progress the project.
  • Worked extensively with an external design company to transform functional drafts into a final product fit for customer consumption. In doing so, I communicated my vision of the design in order to employ modern design principles, automation and deliver proof of concept to the business.
  • Improved operational efficiency by reducing time taken to complete documents, automating calculations, reducing rework and providing security documents that were previously non-standard and exacted resource and cost drains on legal and credit, and reduced customer frustration.
  • Initiated business wide change on documentation matters where other areas of the business wanted to achieve the same improvements I delivered.

In this role I also did the following:

  • Massively improved MI by taking a diffusive set of data and consolidating it into a series of robust and intuitive set of reporting tools.
  • Drafted policies and monitored regulatory and legal changes to keep documents up-to-date.
  • Fixed a failing supplier relationship and built a long-lasting understanding.
  • Designed, launched and maintained an intuitive intranet site for storage of documents that reduced costs and increased governance and oversight.
  • Completed a project to ensure all third party partners were signed up on new agreements.
  • Control and management of finance agreements, customer documentation and letters administered throughout the customer journey.
  • Updating power of attorney documents by liaising with company secretary.
