Work history

Individual Project

University of Nottingham
Nottingham, Nottingham
09.2024 - 05.2025
  • Completed an individual research project into the optimal structures of composites for automotive use, under multi-axial loading.
  • The project was a multi-scale analysis of carbon fibre sandwich models. in order to determine what orientations of carbon fibre and core materials would produce the greatest specific stiffness during a three-point bending test.
  • Finite element analysis was performed in Abaqus, initially in 2-D to assess the feasibility of the project. A honeycomb core structure was chosen during this process.
  • 3-D models were then produced, a full scale model of a composite sandwich, with a simplified core structure was modelled. Three point testing of various carbon fibre orientations was performed on it.
  • A scale model of the honeycomb core was constructed and simulated on its own, to determine approximate mechanical properties that would be used in the full scale model.
  • Lab testing was conducted following to simulation process to assess the validity of the simulation data.
  • The project required constant liaising with the employer, through weekly meeting, updates and the keeping of logs. A presentation was also given at the midpoint of the project.

Aftertreament Integration and Development Student

Cummins
Darlington, County Durham
08.2023 - 08.2024
  • Year long Industrial Placement working for Cummins Emissions Solutions. Received praise from management on my quality and speed of work, organisation and work ethic.
  • Completed training on safety in the workplace, cybersecurity, data management among other things.
  • Completed QA training, refining my use of Microsoft Excel, data processing abilities project management and communication.
  • Improved my proficiency with multiple versions Matlab and taught myself Simulink to effectively use models of company engine and Aftertreatment systems.
  • Was taught how to use Concerto for data processing and graphing. Used the software to test company products.
  • Was taught to use the proprietary tool Cummins Calterm, to calibrate engine systems, and take logs of testing data.
  • Produced documentation on numerous mature Aftertreatment diagnostics for new cybersecurity products, a 9 month project. Starting with basic functions, then collecting data on warning systems and responses; calibrations for each product platform were evaluated. Changes from parent products to the software as well as the rationale for them were detailed. Data on test performances of each diagnostic were collected and evaluated, as I sourced explanations for results that were concerning.
  • I eventually presented my documentation to senior management, and effectively acted on action items that I was given, closing all of them with immediacy, The diagnostics I was responsible for passed inspection.
  • Assisted with testing engines running new products, evaluating data generated from test cells. Data was organised in Excel, and evaluated. Data was presented validating the emissions generated, and identifying issues with tests, such-as incorrect testing procedures, which were and addressed. All tests were eventually completed successfully.
  • Validated new software for a diagnostic. Using a proprietary simulation tool, in Matlab, generating simulation files using existing field test data, and ran these files in the simulation tool. Old and new software models were tested, with diagnostic behaviour being compared. Matlab scripts were created to extract values of the number of decisions each diagnostic made. I created a master spreadsheet for all the data, and we successfully demonstrated that new software increased the frequency of diagnostic decisions.
  • I was assigned to a year long Student Project: We were tasked with evaluating why Right First Time (RFT) values for two Test Cells were below expected levels, evaluating test logs for 2023, identifying causes for Non-RFT test running, compiling hours lost, costs and prevalent causes. This data was graphed in Excel and presented to senior company management. Test Engineering was also consulted through this process, to identify why certain issues were prevalent, and steps that had already been taken to remedy them. Recommendations on testing processes, and the logging of testing were made and shared by myself and the other student, in response to our experiences on the project.
  • Worked with the US team on a new product, being designed for the 2027 EPA regulations. I was personally tasked with running a simulation relating to sootloading behaviours. I retrofitted an old Matlab script for the new models and then processed and manipulated US Test Cell data, so it could be simulated, using results to inform the tuning of components related to sootloads in Aftertreatment systems.

Group Design and Make Project

University of Nottingham Race Team
Nottingham, Nottingham
10.2022 - 06.2023
  • Designed and built a prototype of a Formula Student Chassis for the UON Race team
  • Was given a brief to aid the transition of the race team from a steel space-frame chassis to a carbon fibre chassis.
  • Worked in a five person team to design a chassis that made use of carbon fibre plates, such that it could be manufactured with the facilities available to the race team.
  • Presented CAD designs to the employer, following initial concepts, and iterated upon the designs based on employer feedback and the FS rulebook and specifications given,
  • Personally performed Finite Element Analysis in Abaqus, creating a simulation of the Shear test and 3 point bending tests that the rulebook required for carbon fibre chassis. These simulations were used to evaluate the structure of the carbon fibre skins and the aluminium honeycomb that would be used to make the carbon fibre plates.
  • Worked in concert with two other GDM projects, also commissioned by the race team, to design a suspension and powertrain for the new chassis design.
  • Performed research into carbon fibre inserts to determine how the chassis should be adapted to ensure the chassis interfaced effectively with the suspension.
  • Conducted a feasibility analysis, producing a plywood mock up of the carbon fibre chassis. The chassis was able to successfully constructed, and scrutineering templates were able to fit in the chassis, as specified by the rulebook.
  • Scored 80% for the project.

Group Design and Make Project

University of Nottingham
Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
10.2021 - 06.2022
  • Designed and made a rig to test a Hirth-Serration Coupling, that would apply torque at intervals given by the employer.
  • Fabricated CAD models of numerous parts, including the base plates of the assembly, and took lead on creating a bottom-up CAD assembly, using Solidworks, that was approved by the employer.
  • Presented CAD designs to the employer, on a weekly basis, and led design iterations, from the initial hand drawn concepts, to the final CAD assembly, based on their feedback.
  • Worked as part of a two person team to fabricate the final design in a workshop. Was responsible for coordinating with logistics to ensure materials were supplied in time to be worked. Also supervised the 3-D printing of numerous parts, creating print files, and setting up the 3-D printers.
  • Made use of a Milling and turning techniques in order to fabricate the test rig's parts, in concert with hand tools, making use of the process sheets that the group wrote.
  • Tested the rig and found it satisfied employer expectations, scoring 8 out of 10, by their metrics, as the rig successfully induced failure in the Hirth-Serration coupling under all the circumstances that the employer mandated.
  • Provided weekly performance feedback on resource allocation, risks, issues and schedule adherence, keeping project teams on track.
  • Scored 72% on the project.

Individual Design project

University of Nottingham
Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
10.2021 - 06.2022

  • Was given specifications for the system, including (but not limited to) the systems weight, and reserve factors for the strength of components, which were satisfied.
  • Maintained a rapport with the employer, effectively hitting deadlines for presented work, and making adjustments to the design as requested.
  • Created a CDR, including engineering drawings and calculations to demonstrate that the employers specifications had been satisfied.

Group Design and Make Project

University of Nottingham

  • Designed the system to hold the mass in place, when the cart travelled, and fabricated it in Solidworks.
  • Provided calculations that allowed the bearings for the front and rear axle to be sized appropriately.
  • Scored 61% on the project.
