  • 1-2-1's with staff on a 6-8 week basis.
  • Annual Performance, development reviews- what they have done well over the year, what could be improved, what they would like to work on in the coming year and any additional training they may require in order to do all of the above.
  • Performance improvement plans with staff members- adapting all the time to what the staff is capable of doing and working towards their strengths as well as working on weaknesses to help improve work.

Initial Response Officer

Victim Support Charity
Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex
05.2016 - 01.2019
  • In this role I gained experience in managing risk, completing DASHH assessments, signposting to separate services such as NCDV (National Centre For Domestic Violence) if required and safeguarding when necessary - for both adults and children.
  • It is important in my work that I am accurate, detailed and professional in all of my recordings of contact, which I do without fail after each communication or discussion with professionals about the client.
  • It is critical that another person or an outside organisation be able to understand my note taking on a case to ensure a client is supported properly, so a good level of literacy and excellent organisation has been essential in my role.
  • I am in contact with and support a variety of people with different needs who have suffered from a variety of crimes against them.
  • Working as an Initial Response Officer has required me to develop excellent listening skills - it is so important in my role not only to hear what the person I'm supporting is saying, but how it is being said and whether there is perhaps something they aren't ready to talk about yet, but that may require support at a later date.
  • I have found that patience and not jumping to conclusions have been crucial elements of my job, and am confident in my communication skills to make the people I support feel heard
  • I have worked with a number of victims of racially or religiously aggravated crimes, and feel this has given me a good understanding of cultural, equality and diversity issues.
  • Confidentiality is a huge aspect of my job, and this is discussed fully with each client at the beginning of every conversation- I make sure my clients are fully aware of both their rights and my duties as an initial response officer to remain confidential unless it would compromise their safety or someone else's.
  • In the past I have had to safeguard adults and children to make sure there safety is paramount and keep the conversation flowing until such Welfare teams get to the client.
  • I was also involved in leading a project that involved gathering information within Sussex and determining the various ways in which introducing the Victim Support service improved contact rates, as well as other factors that affected this. The data the team and I collected concluded that clients responded differently to phone calls from the team at different times of the day, and that the language used in Victim Support assessments had an effect on them being successful.
