RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Thermal Modelling of a Formula-E 2nd generation Battery Pack

  • Thermal Management in EVs is critical for optimizing performance, safety, and longevity, especially in High-Performance vehicles like Formula E.
  • Lumped Base Thermal Models offer a simplified approach for the early stages of simulations but often lack accuracy in handling localized heat sources and detailed system interactions.
  • The Thermal Network Model approach was used for more detailed Mathematical Calculations by incorporating heat flow paths, but they remain limited when multi-domain interactions (thermal, electrochemical, mechanical) are essential for battery pack thermal modeling.
  • Multi-scale multi-domain (MSMD) Models on ANSYS provide the highest accuracy for simulating complex systems like battery packs in Formula-E, where multi-physics interactions need to be considered.
  • Immersive Cooling using dielectric fluids (like 3M Novec 7000) in Formula-E battery packs has proven to be more effective than air or liquid cooling, due to its high heat transfer coefficient and better thermal control.

Perf. Enhancement of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Using Deflector

  • To enhance the performance, various structures were studied to set around VAWT.
  • While researching the shapes of guide vanes for Deflectors around VAWT, the shapes considered were a Straight plate, Aerofoil, Spline, Obtuse Triangle, Reuleaux Triangle, Arbelos Triangle, and Circular Horn Triangle.
  • In total 12 shapes for vanes were studied and modeled for the CFD Analysis using Ansys, modified arbelos triangle with two sides concave and one convex was ideal.
  • The parameters considered for this shape were the Inner Curve angle (θ), Outer Curve angle (α), and Inner and Outer radius of the vane holder. A total of 15 combinations of different angles and other data were modeled and simulated.
  • CFD analysis of the deflector was to identify the region where the velocity intensifies, which should be in the direction of rotation with VAWT and tangent to the turbine radius.
