Personal experience has led me to believe that encouragement, enthusiasm and a good sense of humour are crucial in helping to maintain a good learning environment and positive self-esteem for Students (and staff!). I strongly believe that if individuals are to reach their full potential they need to understand what is expected of them and what the next stages of development will consist of. I utilise a range of strategies in order to stimulate interest and enthusiasm from students when introducing new concepts. Objectives need to be made clear and accessible, sharing of ideas, in order to optimise potential, instils a sense of ownership which ultimately leads to achievement.
I consider that organisation and making the most of the working environment is an important aspect of the learning space. As a creative person, I ensure that interactive displays capture interest and inspire students to explore further about specific learning opportunities. This also creates a good working environment for staff.
I have enjoyed taking every opportunity to use ICT for different aspects of my career, for instance when I made a presentation using ‘power-point' with animations on the future changes for the veterinary practice I was working in. I believe it is imperative that we embrace the age of technology and communicate to and with the students, in a manner with which they are familiar.
An advantage of embarking on teaching as a second career is that I have considerable life experience, on which to draw. For example, my previous career as a Veterinary Hospital Manager has enabled me to become skilled in managing a team of people in a highly pressured job. The benefit of being a mother of two boys, (Sam now 35 and Ben 33 years!) has been evident throughout my life so far. I empathise with other staff that have families and relate to the hectic home life that they lead, along with understanding their concerns with creating a good ‘work/life' balance whilst pursuing a demanding career.
In support of my application, I can offer good health and reliability, coupled with a sense of humour, professional commitment and strong family support to fulfil the post of Lecturer in Animal Care. I would welcome the opportunity to become an integral part of your hard working and dedicated team.
