Work history

Australian Christian College
Albany, WA
01.2020
  • Due to Covid, I returned home to Australia and began looking for a teaching position. The Australian Christian College (ACC) offered me a part time distance education position, which involved marking other teachers’ assignments. I spent most of my time creating and marking English assignments. Terry Phipson was my line manager, who would give me a set of classes that I had to mark for particular teachers. Due to the students learning through the LMS, Canvas, I had to be very specific with my feedback as well as very consistent.

The City Impact Church School
Auckland
01.2019
  • Teaching Cambridge Geography to AS level and junior Geography from years 8 – 10.

Snowy Mountains Grammar
01.2015
  • In December of 2014 I left Australia to embark on an extensive tour of my home country of South Africa and the neighbouring countries of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia. When I arrived back in the country during Term 1, I decided to engage in casual teaching in both Melbourne and Brisbane. In Term 2 I moved back to Jindabyne to be closer to the Snowy Mountains Grammar School where I worked once before. I have been employed by SMGS as a casual teacher and as a Boarding House Supervisor.

The Geelong College
01.2014
  • Taught Middle School Geography to Year 7 and 8 students.

The Kilmore International School
01.2013
  • The Kilmore International School is a high achieving IB school which mainly caters for international students. My duties at this school included teaching IB Geography as well as junior History and Geography. I was also responsible for the school’s Duke of Edinburgh program which involved organising and attending two camps per year and overseeing the completion of each course component.

Snowy Mountains Grammar School
Jindabyne, New South Wales
01.2009
  • I was employed to replace the Head of Geography, Phil Ryrie, while he was away for term 1 and 2. My duties included teaching Geography to years 7, 10, 11 and 12 and Business Studies to year 11 as well as setting and marking the Senior Mid-Year Examinations and assignments. As this is also a boarding school, staff perform two nights of study supervision per term as well as week-end supervision.

Brisbane Grammar School
Brisbane, Queensland
01.2008
  • I was employed by The Brisbane Grammar School to fill a long service leave position in the Geography Department. I taught Geography to Grades 8, 10 and 11.

Casual teaching

Aberdeen International School and Scottish Highlands Council
01.2021 - 01.2024
  • I attempted to return to Australia during Covid but the constant lockdowns and border closures made it very difficult to secure reliable work. I decided in 2021 to live with my family in the UK until I could return to Australia. Most of my time in the UK was spent at the Aberdeen International School but I also fulfilled a few short term contracts for the Scottish Highlands Council when teachers were absent for extended periods of time.

One School Global
Hawkes Bay
01.2019 - 01.2020
  • I enjoy challenges and this position presented a multitude of challenges I never thought possible when I first began my teaching career. My job was to teach year 9 and 10 Social Studies and L1, L2 and L3 (Senior) Geography to students in different parts of the country via video link (Zoom). None of the students I taught were physically in-front of me. Trying to make lessons and assessment tasks engaging via a webcam was a massive learning curve and one which I thoroughly enjoyed. It also allowed me to get a great understanding of the New Zealand education system (NCEA)

Gippsland Grammar School
Sale
01.2016 - 01.2018
  • I was initially employed by Gippsland Grammar to replace the Senior History teacher whilst he was on six month long service leave. My duties included teaching VCE History, year 8 and 10 History as well as year 7 and 8 Religion. I was also involved in both indoor and outdoor soccer. I was then employed to work in the Year 9 centre after the initial six months, which caters exclusively to the needs of young adolescents. The Year 9 centre is a demanding role as teachers are required to meet the requirements of the curriculum as well as attend four outdoor education camps per year. At the end of 2017 I moved back to the senior school and taught VCE Geography and junior Humanities.

ASSESSMENT OF RICHARD JOHN MACAULAY

General Richard has been a student at the University of Stellenbosch for the past number of years. Over the last four years I have become well acquainted with Richard as a student in The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. ACADEMIC RECORD AND POTENTIAL Richard’s academic record reflects good quality work diligently done during his undergraduate studies. He has above average intellectual abilities. Richard has demonstrated a capacity to work independently and conscientiously at tasks assigned to him. For the past two years Richard has been assigned to assess the Tests in a second year course “Societal-Environmental Interaction: Climatic factors and Influences” and Practical assignments in a first year course, “Remote Sensing of Human-Environmental Systems. This commission he has carried out in a dedicated, thorough and very competent manner. Richard has also accepted tutorships helping students of formerly disadvantaged communities and he has definitely contributed greatly and certainly was instrumental in them succeeding and passing their Geography courses. Personal I can vouch for his sense of duty and ability to perform reasonable tasks given to him. He is a person of sober habit and I know him as a respectful young man whom is easy to get along with. He is also ready to give help, even beyond the call of duty. Richard has the confidence, breadth of vision and willingness to use all opportunities afforded him. Recommendation Considering the above, I believe that Richard Macaulay would be a worthy recipient of any opportunity (for which he may be appropriately qualified) afforded him. Finally I am convinced that Richard will be an asset to any institution where he may study or any firm who may employ him or any community where he may reside. P.J. Eloff Lecturer (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies) University of Stellenbosch.Rep. of South Africa. September 2004
