A Custody Nurse (also known as a Forensic Custody Nurse or Healthcare Practitioner) provides high-quality clinical care to individuals in police custody. The role involves assessing and treating detainees, supporting police staff with health-related matters, and ensuring the legal and ethical management of individuals within the criminal justice system. Custody Nurses play a critical role in safeguarding vulnerable people and maintaining clinical standards in a secure environment.
• Conduct forensic procedures such as obtaining blood/urine samples, documenting injuries, and providing clinical statements for legal use.
• Maintain accurate, confidential, and legally defensible clinical records.
• Provide expert clinical opinion when required to support ongoing investigations.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, such as PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act) or equivalent local laws.
• Provide urgent and routine medical care, including wound management, medication administration, and chronic condition management.
• Assess and monitor individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs, ensuring safe withdrawal management where appropriate.
• Identify and respond to acute medical issues, escalating to emergency services when necessary.
• Deliver mental health assessments and support, including suicide-risk screening and self-harm prevention planning.

I have gained multiple skills and knowledge across the surgical field by being exposed to multiple specialties through the surgical assessment and triage on the ward. These are: Colorectal, Upper GI, Urology, ENT, Trauma and Orthopaedic and Gynaecology. Therefore, I believe I will be adaptable, able to provide a broad range of knowledge, I am eager to learn and develop in a new setting, flexible and proactive.
