  • Evaluation of aphrodisiac activity of oysters in male Wistar rat

The study was conducted to evaluate the aphrodisiac activity of oysters (Crassostrea madrasensis) in male Wistar rats. In the study, animals were divided into four groups with 6 animals in each, and oral administration of oyster extract was given to the test group, Sildenafil citrate for the standard group and distilled water for the control group respectively for 21 days. Sexual behavioral parameters (mounting and intromission frequencies, mounting, intromission, and ejaculatory latencies, post-ejaculatory interval, Copulatory rate, and index of libido) were observed. Serum testosterone and cholesterol concentrations, sperm count, and weight of sexual organs were also monitored.

  • The potential of TLQP-21 to activate primary rat astrocytes

Primary astrocyte cultures were prepared from P3  neonatal rat pups. Cultures were maintained for 21 days before being used for treatment.  Treatments included cocktails of IL-6 with either IL-1α, TNFα, or both, and TLQP-21. Live images were captured before fixation after 16 or 24 hours, using phase contrast microscopy.  Cultures were then stained with antibodies targeting GFAP (astrocyte pan marker) and AQP4  (astrocyte activation marker) before staining with Hoechst. These were then visualised using fluorescence microscopy. Morphological characteristics like vacuolation and hypertrophy were quantified between treatment groups. Finally, the Greiss assay was performed to evaluate the concentration of nitrite and nitrate in the cell culture media.
